Default Too much oil

Had the oil changed on my 07 coupe which should take 5.5 quarts of oil. Got back and notice the dip stick reads slightly above the top mark so I look at the invoice and see they put in 6 quarts. My question is how critical is it to get the level back down to 5.5 or is the half quart overfill minor?

your manual actually suggests 6 for track use, I believe. I read about a lot of people putting in six as well. out of pure superstition I stick to 5.5, but I dont think I would personally be too concerned about 6.

It wont hurt a thing. Half a quart is not worth worrying about, The factory even recommends overfilling by up to a quart if your going to take it to the track to flog it!. Of course it also says to drain it out when your done racing. But a 1/2 quart is fine.

That was what I was thinking but wanted to get other thoughts from more knowledgeable members. The manual said 6 quarts for the performance Z51 package so I assumed it was no big deal for a base model but wanted to make sure. Thanks for the reinforcement and responses.

Due to the oil cooler. I would not worry about .5 quart.

Yes it was. They had always been reasonable and competent with oil changes for my C5 so I felt comfortable with going there.

Remember also that they will charge you for a full quart for any part of a quart, so to get the level right, they, just like you, would have to buy 6 quarts. Even if they use bulk oil, no place charges for half a quart. A little over on the stick is not anything to worry about...

Bingo! SOP.

If it reads over the top, take it back and make them un-fill it. If it doesn't, don't worry about it. If it is too far a drive to bother, a turkey baster works well to remove the excess.

I always check, now, before I get too far away from them to have them suck it out if necessary.

Slightly over won't hurt anything. I have put 6 qts in my 07 LS2 a number of times.

Past threads about overfilling found that some folks got the dreaded burnt oil smell but some didn't.

Hey owc6, where do you stick a turkey baster to take out half a quart of oil? I'm not jabbin you, I'm just curious.

who knows what else they must be screwing up - it is not rocket science to fill a car up the top of the range on the dipstick...did you check the level after leaving the engine off for a few minutes to get the correct level, it could even be higher than what you think if you checked just after shutting the engine
