Default New Key Fob

I have a 2007 C6 Vert. I have two fobs that are programmed 1 and 2. They are the type that has the separate key. I want to replace one of them with one of the 2008 fobs that has they key enclosed. I have bought a fob and key blank from ebay. The key opens the trunk after I had it cut. I haven't tried to program the fob yet. What is the easiest way to do this.

There are 2 different procedures for programming a fob. The shorter procedure just adds a fob and programs it as the next fob number. So, if you use that procedure, presumably that new fob would be programmed as fob #3. That fob would not have access to the memory options.

The longer procedure reprograms all fobs, and starts programming them as fob #1, then fob #2, etc.. Again, whichever fobs get programmed as #1 and #2 have memory options. The 3rd fob programmed would not.

The shorter procedure is the easiest to do.

With a M6 car does the memory options matter? I still have to hit the button.

If the fob you're using isn't programmed as fob #1 or fob #2, there's no access to memory options, so hitting the button doesn't do anything.

The memory options mean something if you want to use them to automatically change the mirrors, seat driving & exit positions, radio presets, steering column adjustments, climate control settings, etc..

Default Bummer

Well that's what I thought. I want to program the new style fob as #1. I do like using the memory functions so I guess I am stuck with the long method. It seems a little scary. I have printed the instructions from the forum and I have the book.

I just picked up one of the new style fobs to use with my 06, but found that the key blank is not as wide as my existing key. I even tried to see if my existing key would even go into the bottom of the fob and it would not. I have a flat key (no plastic on it) that I just taped to an old expired store credit card and keep it in my wallet. I was wondering if the I had the new blank cut to the existing key if it would still work or if the lower high spots would prevent it.

Duckman, what was the GM part # of the fob you bought? Mine is 25995382.

Boomer I am at work and will get you the number when I get home. I went to the Chevrolet dealer and got the key blank cut to the VIN#. He showed me that the blank was not the same as the keys I had. He said it wouldn't work but I told him to cut it anyway and it DOES work.

Has anybody out there programmed one of the new style (2008>) fobs to a 2007 or older C6?

I haven't, but several others here have and have posted about it. Shouldn't be any problem.

Using new fob in older C6's has been discussed frequently. This is how I decided I wanted to do it.

Here's a pic of the three style fobs, and the the keys that go with them. As you can see, all three keys are different and do not fit in each other's fob, as well as the '05 key will not fit in either fob. However, the fobs are interchangeable and can be programmed to work with any year.

My '07 key looks like the one on the left, I bought one like the '09 in the center and had it cut to the VIN at the dealer. He said it would not work but it does open the trunk. Don't know if it would work on the glove box but I don't lock it.

That's interesting. You got me curious, and so I tried to put the '09 key in all three of the keyholes on my '05. Obviously, I wasn't expecting it to turn, because it's not the right key, but I wanted to see if it would even go in. It slid right in the same distance as the correct key.

I'm glad it worked for you!

I was curious after purchasing the new fob if my 06 key would insert into the bottom of the new fob, and it would not even go past the point as the width of the key is wider. I may have the new blank cut anyway and if it opens the trunk then I'll be happy, but if not, I can continue to keep the spare in my wallet.

The plastic bag the new fob came in is GM#15212382.

Default Uh Oh

I put the key in the fob and now can't get it out. I have tried pushing the release button but the key won't budge. What now?

Push the button harder. C6 fobs are notoriously hard to unlatch. I can barely squeeze hard enough on mine to get it going. If you don't have it attached to a ring or something that you can grab to help pull, it's even harder.

I did pull hard enough to get it out now. "Worked" on it a little and it's ok now. Will program tomorrow and will post the results.

Read these instructions before getting started..nothing to be worried about if you test the glovebox slot before doing anything. If you want the new fob to be #1 or 2, then you must do the long procedure...no choice.
