Burning Brakes
I had the same problem on my 05. I did a search on this forum and saw some members were using a cheap little spring to keep the plunger out, so that is what I did and no more problems with it. For right now you can tug and push on the release tab inside the trunk a couple of times and it should pop back out.

Start with the rear hatch open and make sure that the pull tab on the left back hand side to open the lid is not pulled back and holding the lid plunger inward.
On the back drivers side of the carpet on the drivers side wall in the car with the hatch open, should have a front tab hanging out of the carpet slot right after the wheel well that is the door release tab lever, then behind, the fuel lip tab release through another slot in the carpet.
If that is not the problem (tab not hung up and pulled back), then the spring in the latch plunger assembly rusted out/ snapped on you and you will need to replace the plunger spring (Less than a few bucks to buy a new spring at Lowes, and will be in the hardware section in the metal cabinets draws).
Skip to post 17, and no you don't need to remove the fender, you can get to the plunger assembly by just pulling the wheel liner instead. This will allow you to remove the plunger to pull it apart, replace the spring, and put it back together and back in the car.
