Road trip to South Dakota
Hi... I'll be driving from Winnipeg, MB to South Dakota during the first week of June...
Plan on visiting the Badlands, Black Hills and that general area...
If anyone knows of things to do, places to visit, roads to tour... please let me know.
Looking forward to some top down driving for sure!
I have a 2007 Official Pace Corvette with 40k miles (yes, the Atomic Orange one)... 6 speed, droptop...
Ragtop...

I have a lot of suggestions...
1) Badlands Loop
2) Custer State park wildlife loop - you'll see buffalos, burros, antelope
3) Mt Rushmore
4) Spearfish Canyon
5) Eat at the Alpine Inn in Hill City
6) Crazy Horse monmument...at least drive by
7) Deadwood if you like to gamble
8) The Needles Highway
There is a ton of things to do and see. Pick up a visitors guide.

Spearfish Canyon is popular. It is nice, but it sucks that they've lowered the speed limit.
Deadwood is cool. Especially if you like to gamble.
Needles Highway is awesome.

OP-
You will be visiting one of the least-known beautiful areas of the US. We've been to that area three times and still have more to see.
Be aware that darned near any car on the road might be a radar patrol car, we even saw a couple of rather beat up old pickups running moving radar with faded PD lettering on the door.
But there are places where we let the horses loose for a while...
It can be a long way between gas stations.
Enjoy!

Thanks for posting. My first road trip was from Milwaukee to South Dakota. Your pictures brought back some great memories. I'm pretty sure your trip was as much fun as it was for us.

If you go to Mt Rushmore( and you should), don't take 16 out of Rapid City which is the more direct route.
For a great scenic route through Custer State Park, take route 16T south out of Rapid City to just past Hermosa, ( about 20 miles) take a right onto Hwy 36, go about 6-7 miles and take a right on ALT 16 ( Peter Norbeck Scenic Highway), this turns into 16A . Take a left on 244 to the monument lots of signs there to direct you.
I6A takes you through several tunnels that point right at Mt Rushmore as you exit the tunnels. This route is super twisty, and in the State park , sometimes the wild donkeys will come up to your car to beg food.
I have taken this route several times and I always recommend it.
You can also take 385 north from the monument area to Deadwood, also very scenic.

I live in Rapid City. The Black Hills of South Dakota are one of the best places in the U.S. to be a Corvette owner. The area has a lot of history if you are into that. It has breathtaking scenery if that is your thing. It has wide open spaces for you to enjoy if desired. And best of all lots of twisty roads to drive your Corvette the way the Engineers designed it to be driven. You will not regret visiting the area. In fact...you will want to come back for the Annual Black Hills Corvette Classic in July.

ALL these are good ideas. have done them all and enjoyed all. there is a wild west gun fight in the street that is fun to watch in Deadwood in the afternoon if you can find out what time. Check out the roads in the badlands before you go. They are not paved so it is messy. especially in wet weather. Custer park is a must. the Blackhills country is really beautiful. Proposed to my wife at the Spearfish canyon lodge.
