I just carefully sand it (underneath surface only) with 100-120 grit paper.

I was thinking of using sand paper and doing it like wet sanding a car starting at 1500 up to 2500 but wasn't sure how it would leave the surface. May look better like it is....

Why not buy some carbon fiber vinyl wrap or any other color and wrap it. Simple and easy

Would rather just repair the small amount of road rash.

The underside should be the only part that needs a little sanding unless you run into something. I have used 150 grit to remove the strips of plastic. I am purchasing a new splitter to have on hand when I eventually wear the leading edge off.
