Default Grinding noise from rear end

This is my first thread on the forum. Hi everyone! I'm having a weird grinding noise coming from the rear end of my 06 vert. the noise comes from somewhere in the trans/clutch area in the rear. it comes on and off every 5-10 seconds or so. on initial cold start up, the sound is non existent, only when the car is warmed up is it present. this is all completely at idle by the way, driving it, I cant tell if its there or not. Its parked in my garage so it echos nicely and is very obvious but is more faint in an open area of course. What could this be? let me know if you guys need any more info to help me. thanks

It's a known issue. Change your diff fluid to Amsoil or the updated GM gear lube and the problem will be gone.

By the way, your clutch is not in the rear. It's behind the engine!

are you sure? the car is not moving so is the diff being used at all? Ive read about that topic and most of them say they hear it around corners when the diff is engaged.

No. I'm sorry. I misread your initial post. I have no idea why you should hear such a noise from the rear of the car if the car isn't moving. My best guess is that you are hearing a part of the exhaust system hitting something until it heats up.

yes thats what I initially thought as well. thats why its on and off. so just to clear my head and have some peace, there is no way its the transmission, diff, rear end gears, or clutch, since the car is not moving at all correct?

I actually just had my sister rev the car up and i listened in the back for the noise. it increased with the revs. very simple problem. now im wondering what its touching or whats inside of there? I'll look into it.

One more thing, my exhaust tends to smell a little like firewooks, what does that mean?

Could it be the torque tube bearings? It shouldn't be at 25K, but if it was raced, it could be.
Good luck

Wouldn't think so, as it makes noise in neutral. My guess is exhaust system rattle or leak. Small leak will sound like lifters. Cold the seal could be tight as metal is shrunk, hot the metal expands and could leak. Just a guess.

Could be a bad muffler.

I favor the exhaust also. Ck the hangers; they're some kind of synthetic/rubber and tend to rot/burn, at least in other cars they do.

Q. to LV2: do the torque tube bearings make noise in neutral, sitting still?

It has to be something in the exhaust because of the increase in sound when the revs are up and also because of the odd firewook exhaust smell present. I'm gonna jack it up one of these days when I get a chance and take a real look at it

Might be a loose heat shield.
