Is it odd that both my cats went out at the same time?
Getting the dreaded P0420 and P0430 codes.
I've got a 2005 manufactured in 2/05, so out of warranty.
Mileage is roughly 80K.
I replaced the downstream O2 sensors and still getting the codes.
Isn't it odd that BOTH have gone bad at the same time?
Everything is stock...

Melting Slicks
Ours usually like to go out around dusk. Nocturnal hunters you know.

Warranty on major emissions is 8 yrs. or 80k miles whichever comes first.
Make sure there are no exhuast leaks. Overly rich condition can cause the catalytic converter to go out sooner. It's strange both go out the same time on a stock car.

Te recall on 08 &09 is only for the cars with the California emissions rpo code nu5 I think

I'm sorry, I forgot, I've got a cat-back installed by the former owner.
But everything was inspected by my mechanic when he installed the new sensors, and I gave them a once-over myself. And I haven't heard an increase in exhaust noise nor have I seen or smelled any unusual exhaust fumes as if there was a leak.
I'm not sure what to make of it. Perhaps both upstream sensors went out and prematurely killed my cats? The odds of that though...
Anyway, I guess I'm in the market for two cats.
I'll need them shipped to zip 92648 for anyone who has a couple to sell.
BTW, I know California has different emissions regulations. Do I have to be concerned where replacement cats come from, ie. can they come from a New Jersey C6?

"In honor of jpee"
Actually, I think cars were made to be 50-state compliant but for CA, in prior years there was a CA emissions sticker affixed in the engine bay area. I would think the cats are no more strictly/stringently constructed than elsewhere if all cars made are for 50 states. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong on that one tho.

In 2003, I bought a new 50 state legal BMW in another state had it courtesy delivered to CA. I had to pay for a smog certificate for a brand new car and have DMV do a visual inspection verifying that "special CA emissions sticker". Then I was able to pay CA taxes and registration. The EPA is a business and they are digging into our pockets in many ways. Way over board!!!!
