Check Engine Light and 1st gear only afterward
Took the car out to the Island today and after about a nice 150 mile round trip the CEL goes on and the car ends up only in first gear, luckily a block away from my house. any idea what this symptom might be ? Car was sitting for most of winter until today.
Thanks

I Goggled it, came up transmission control module. I had the same issue on a factory reman transmission on the first day after a replacement install. Fortunately it's not a huge rip apart repair. Remove the trans. cover and there it is. Nothings easy, probably will need some kind of computer work to make it work.

P0700 should not be the only code. P0700 just says there is an issue with the transmission and the TCM is instructing the ECM to illuminate the CEL (Check Engine Light). The manuals says that P0700 can not be cleared until the other TCM codes have been cleared. In other words, P0700 is a catch all code that says there is something seriously wrong and there should be other codes that get more specific.
A type A DTC will clear itself when the issues have been repaired. Pages 6-14 and 6-15 are just the first pages of the entire DTC code index. (They are pointing you to the list of all codes so you can look up the other codes that point to the specific problem that caused the TCM to request the CEL.) Page 6-41 just says to make sure you fixed the problem and clear all codes before returning the car to the customer.
DTC P0700: Transmission Control Module (TCM) Requested MIL Illumination
Circuit/System Description
The transmission control module (TCM) uses the controller area network (CAN) to signal the engine control module (ECM) that the TCM is requesting malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illumination. This happens when the TCM has determined that a failure that affects emissions has occurred in transmission control system. When the ECM receives the correct message from the TCM, DTC P0700 will set.
Conditions for Running the DTC
The ignition is ON.
Conditions for Setting the DTC
The TCM is requesting MIL illumination.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
DTC P0700 is a type A DTC.
Conditions for Clearing the MIL/DTC
DTC P0700 is a type A DTC.
Diagnostic Aids
DTC P0700 can not be cleared from the ECM until the related TCM codes have been cleared.
