Default Radio reception sucks!

2005 with the stock radio. Reception really sucks. Granted living on the WA coast, radio is not that great anyway, but my other cars pull in many stations that the vette won't. Anyone else notice the crappy radio reception? Now, outside of replacing the radio (which I don't want to do for a couple of reasons), is there a way to improve the reception?

Thanks

Sounds like you may have a problem somewhere. My 2007 with Nav has never had any issues with reception. Has always been good.

The antenna is a green wire stretching horizontally behind the rear facia on the inside. Do you have nav? If so there is a firmware update that fixed poor reception problems ON 05 ONLY.

If you are comparing the Vette's AM/FM reception with a car that has an aerial antenna (and probably another antenna in the rear window) then yes the Vette's reception will be worse.

You should consider changing your XM Tuner to a SIRIUS Tuner. Very inexpensive plug-and-play install.

The XM Sats are parked in geo-stationary orbit above the equator and you're far enough North that a truck that is South of you could easily block your signal. There are ground-base repeaters to combat this, but they are in the big cities.

The SIRIUS Sats are in orbit running from pole to pole (geo-synchronous) so you have a Sat 'directly' overhead most of the time.

Less destructive data compression with SIRIUS makes the audio quality better as well, IMHO.

Like EVRose said it's probably the firmware.

On my 05 Vette, it had NAV/Bose and the FM had static. If I switched to AM, then back to FM it would clear it up, but I had to do it every time I started the car up.

I ended up putting in a Kenwood headunit. Now the Bose speakers sound decent and the FM sounds good, plus I use a flash drive with music on it most of the time.

Well, it is a base radio with no NAV, so firmware is out as the issue. Could be the antenna. Any way to install a booster? I guess the quick thing to ask is how to access that antenna wire from the inside.

My 08 has very good reception.
It is much better than my Tahoe, which does suck as far as am/ fm reception goes.

The FM diversity antennas (2) are in the rear fascia.

Don't really know - that's why I burned six MP3 discs. Of course, with nav I can only use one at a time.

Didn't know this, will check it out. Any info on how this is done? Cost?

Learn something new everyday.

eta: I did take it in early on for static on driver #2. They said they couldn't confirm and didn't do anything. The static went away a few years into ownership. Now, I wonder if they did the update at some point, and never told me?

I feel your pain bro. I'm in W.Wa also with an '08. I hope there is an FM booster someone will provide info on also. Otherwise, I wired in an AUX adapter to the SAT radio receiver in the back and tend to listen to MP3's loaded on my phone on longer drives. I wish FM was better for the shorter rips around the local area here.

There was a firmware update for the 05 cd players to allow them to play MP-3 discs and correct a fm static problem. So burn a MP-3 disc, and see if it will play it to begin with, or if the radio needs the firmware update.
Also, go to am, then back to FM and see if that helps the problem. If it does, then you need to have the radio firmware upgraded.
Note, if you need the firmware and the dealer is hopless, I have the files stored, and you just need to burn them to a disc to reflash the radio firmware.

As for the reception if the radio has been firmware updated, first make sure that the antenna plug into the radio is clean and making a good contact, and you have power out of the harness going the fm antenna module .

From there, go to the fm antenna module, make sure that the antenna/power connections are clean/plugged in/ not cracked or shorted out, and that it it getting power as well from the radio.

I have an 07. My FM reception also sucks. Am is barely better. I'm sure there's something up with the antenna. I suspect the connection, as I have had my center console apart a couple of time and I bet something I did loosened the antenna connection at the NAV HU. I never knew the antenna was in the rear valence. That's interesting. I have drilled holes in the rear facia to install a full length ZR1 spoiler. I wonder if I may have nicked or cut the antenna wire?? Hmm.
