If the fob malfunctions all the key will do is get you in the car. You still can't start it.
Take the vin # and proof of ownership to the dealer and they can get you a new key.

Default key

I went to the dealer and they wanted $16 for the blank key. Went to a
locksmith and they cut me a key for $5.The only difference is the plastic on the top of the key.

How would the locksmith do it if you don't have the original?

The first thing I did after buying my car was to get a copy of the metal key made. It cost just a few bucks at the local hardware store. So I have a backup, and because the copy is flat (no black plastic), it fits nicely in my wallet, so if my fob dies or gets lost, at least I can open the car. Plus, I can unlock my glove compartment without having to carry the bulky original key (I rarely put my convertible top up, so I keep the glove box locked). The original key always stays at home now.
