manual vs auto better MPG

manual vs auto better MPG
Just wondering with things being pretty much equal. (same yr, Rear end ratio, driven similarly, ect) Which would get better mileage and by how much?

Manuals have typically always gotten better mpg. I have no facts to prove otherwise for this particular car, however it should fall in the same category as all the other tested vehicles. This is the only car I've never given a flyin' flip about mileage. I just love hearing that throaty V8 and if I see the mpg down towards the single digit range, I know I'm driving it right.

I know of no one who has purchased a Corvette, where gas mileage was a consideration.
The generally accepted wisdom says that manual transmissions get slightly better gas mileage, but again, with a 'vette who really cares?

I agree ^
Gas mileage was the least of my concerns when buying a vette.
Believe me, you will led foot it any time you have the chance....destroying the possibility of any decent gas mileage.

Yea, maybe it does matter. I think I would be happy with either. So if I can get better mileage out of one, it could sway me. I plan to have it a long time and want to make the right choice for me.

I drive a lot and I'm a bit cheap so I won't buy any automobile that doesn't get class leading mpg. The vette fortunately does.
I just drove my modified (AFR seems a bit rich at low 13s) C6 1200 miles in 17 hours and it averaged 25mpg running between 65 and 85 with dozens of full throttle blasts. That's good enough.
Unless you're buying a C7 with the A8 the manual should get better mpg.
I wouldn't even consider an auto sports car btw.
Good luck!

The lockup on modern automatics makes them very close to equal. Even the dubious EPA tests say so. http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Power...te&srchtyp=ymm But let's assume there is a 1mpg difference. If you drive 12,000 miles a year (higher than most) and get 25 mpg (lower than most on the highway), that means you might spend an addition $35 a year at today's prices. Even at $4/gallon a Prius never paid for itself over a Hummer in terms of cost per year. If you can afford a Corvette then get what you want and don't worry about the pennies you might be able to save if you got something else.

Lets look at two cars. One averages 22 mpg and one 25. (which is a bigger spread than it would be with a Corvette manual vs auto, more like 1 mpg)
1000 miles at 22 mpg =45 gallons
1000 miles at 25 mpg =40 gallons
About $15 every 1000 miles in gas, big whoop.

I don't suppose many people have researched this.

If the difference was significant, the EPA would have a rating for both transmissions.

Traded my 13 GS MN6 coupe for an A6 2012 vert. MN6 got slightly less gas mileage probably because I love running up the RPM in 1st and 2nd too much

All MPG test by the manufactures are done under so-called perfect conditions that will give them the best MPG results they possibly can get. So unless one plans on or has the luxury of driving in perfect conditions every day then I would think the difference would be negligible.

I just returned from a 5785 mile road trip in my manual 2010 C6 convertible. It took 222.9 gallons for an average of 25.95 mpg.
I can't say which gets better mileage, the manual or auto, but they are close.

Unlike most owners gas mileage was a priority for me as my Vette is my only car. I don't have the data on an A8 but I religiously log my fuel economy for my Manual Grand Sport Coupe. A few disclaimers: my car is slightly heavier due to the added subwoffer + aftermarket radio w/wiring, also I've added thermal & sound deadening to the entire interior. I also run Bridgestone Pole Position Run Flat which I've been told are a few pounds heavier, so for a standard coupe I would add 2 MPGs to all my numbers.
My stats after 2.5 years & 54k miles:
- Driving to work (mixed): 15-19 MPG
- Pure city driving (stop/go): 12-15 mpg
- Highway Driving @ 75ish: 25-27, best of 29MPG
- Highway Driving allegedly @ 85+ish: 18-23
- Track Driving (decent pace): 6-8MPG
- Moutain Driving 40-60MPH w/ high 2nd & 3rd Gear RPMS: 17-20 MPG
Other meaningful metrics:
- Fuel Economy Counter is roughly 0.5~1.0 MPG generous in reference to my hand calculations
- I average roughly 275 miles per fill-up of city driving (15.5-16.0 gallons)
- Highway I usually achieve a range of about 430 miles before I need to look for a gas station
- At VIR full course I get about two 20 minute sessions before I need fuel

interesting this topic has just happened. friends here were chatting about mileage and asked me what mine was....
i said... "i have no clue , i have never ever checked it and really dont care"
i suspect manual would get better mileage, if i were to hazard a guess.

Today's Automatics are far more efficient than those of yester-year. At most you might see 1 MPG drop. That's probably less than manufacturing variances from car to car.
I frequent a Toyota Tundra forum and am always amazed at the lengthy discussions about how to eek out 1 more MPG from a 400 HP behemoth. Really?
