My dad, being very frugal, bought a new '59 Rambler because they were supposed to get good MPG. This was when gas was 20-25¢ per gallon.
As I recall, he got about 27 MPG on a trip; it was a full-size 4 dr. sedan, 6 banger, three on tree. Not bad for an era when nobody cared about MPG.

No need to troll...
Oh, and for those who are interested MPG coming back was 27, but the ave. speed was much less due to heavy rains.

My Vette gets better mileage at 75-80 mph than my Subaru Forester does ... 2.5 liter 4 banger, 170 hp, and about the same weight.
The Forester is much, much better in daily "around town" driving though.

Fuel is cheap these days and it's a play car anyways. But I had heard these stories of the 33 mpg Corvettes and had bought in to it I suppose.
It does get 25-26 mpg on highway trips but gets mid teens the rest of the time.

That makes sense and 5-8 mpg is 'quite a bit' actually.

Holy cow....I thought I was the only one who had a Dad like that back in the 60's........My Dad bought a 60 Rambler for the same reasons.....3 on the tree with a straight 6.....no air and he put on those plastic seat covers to protect the fabric......always enjoyable on a summer vacation....Here is the kicker it was Pink.....the salesman made him a hell of a deal because nobody wanted it.....I used to take a lot of heat from my buds for that car...........geez.....
Although.....I kinda wished I had it back so I could torment my kids with it while they were growing up.......

And when he got 27 MPG there were no interstates, not around us anyway. When people say they are averaging 30+ (NOT instant) with a C6 it is probably just a steady speed on an interstate -- a lot different from the trips we went on with the Rambler.
Last summer I averaged 29 with my LS2 for about 40 miles, more than half being interstate, the rest was country roads. As soon as I got off the IS in suburbia the average dropped off quickly.
My dad's was dark blue like this, only NO chrome trim, NO two-tone, NO whitewalls. Damn that thing is ugly. I wouldn't drive it to a dog fight and this is the "fancy" one, lol.
