Default Please help identify this whine on acceleration (+Videos)

Car is 2008 m6 with 155,000 miles on the original tr6060

Clutch is the ls7 assembly and has about 80k miles

The whine only occurs on acceleration when the car is in gear. It goes not occur when the clutch is depressed or the car is in neutral regardless of vehicle speed or engine rpm.

It is not audible until any speed over 35 mph.

The whine seems to be a slightly lower frequency under about 50 mph and then seems to wind up a little higher by the time I reach freeway speeds. But if I hold any speed constant and change gears the frequency is exactly the same.

I am going to have the car looked at this week but wanted to see if I could get a general idea of what's wrong beforehand.

Would I be correct in assuming that the issue must be related to the transmission, because

1: The whine is not constant or dependent on vehicle speed ruling out the differential

2: The whine does not occur in neutral with the clutch depressed or engaged ruling out a clutch issue or throwout bearing

I'm attaching two videos. You'll need to be in a quiet setting to hear the whine. The whine is not continuous because I am flicking the gas pedal. If I set cruise control instead it would be a continuous whine. The second video shows depressing the clutch while the vehicle is in motion and revving the engine, with no whine, but the instant it is back in gear and accelerating it comes back.

Thanks for any help

Rear gear and/or axle bearing, my guess.
GL

Oops, just reread your post, might be torque tube bearings, if the sound (pitch) does not increase with road speed.

It did not take me long to hear the rear diff howling in that video. I could be wrong but if I were a betting man I would say to check that first. I have replaced a few. Putting car in neutral will take load off of rear diff. Upon acceleration whine is louder. I still think your diff. has issues. Take it to a drive train shop and let them test drive it with you in drivers seat. PM me for a real good gearing guy. He is a gearing specialist located here local.

Yes, it was the differential. Have fun with the repair bill
