Default Do they need to remove the waterpump to replace the AC compressor?

My AC compressor is bad and I was advised by the dealer that the water pump has to come off to do the job, is that true? Also can anyone advise the hours required to replace the compressor?

Thanks

Hi Rocketman,
If the Vette is like most cars then the waterpump would not need removal to service the AC compressor. The water pump is behind the AC compressor.

I can only comment on C5, which is probably the same.... dealer told me I had a bad compressor and the system wouldn't hold Freon.

In March 2014, I bought a new AC compressor kit (not just the compressor) through BuyAutoParts.com for $299.95 all-in. It was cheaper than what the dealer quoted me.

A few weeks later, I had my local dealership do the install. The water pump had to be removed and then re-installed. All-in price for the job was $496.25 (ouch). That included labor, rings, shop supplies, fluids and Freon. Not sure of the exact number of hours. So in total I spent almost $800 to get my AC working again.

On LS1, the AC compressor is below the water pump.

Thanks for the info, just sounded strange. Had to move the anti-lock brake block when I did the power steering pump so not out of the realm of possibility.

I would say yes it has to come off. The block on the passenger side that the heater core lines run to and a few other lines covers the top of the AC compressor.

R&R the water pump shouldnt add more than .5-1 to the total bill plus $20 in gaskets plus a dex-cool fill.

It seems like most any repair on a C6 starts at $1,000, and goes up from there...Mostly because of all the crap they have to remove to get to what they're trying to fix......WW

I got a price of around $2,300. to replace the compressor and water pump. Around 9 hours labor. I was able to get the labor down to the fleet price and got the parts prices down close to one of the Forum vendors' price.

Make sure they are not charging you additional labor to install the new water pump. Should be cost of the new water pump only. Price to replace A/C compressor includes removal and re-installation of water pump

I don't know....that sounds high to me but never had one replaced....might want to replace belt tensioners also while you are at it......don't want to have one of those freeze up on you......9 hours labor at a 100 bucks per hour is 900 dollars so the parts are 1400 bucks.....??

My compressor is leaking so i will have to replace waywr pump.I researched on this yes you have to remove the water pump but one guy did it w/o removing the water pump but he had to remove the water pump thermostadt and loosen the right side motor monut and jack up the engine on the side one inch minium. I would rather remove the water pymp and replace it when doing the compressor rather than jacking up right side of the engine. Besides water pump is least 20 years old on c5s so good to replace it.

A/C is bottom left, and plenty of room to remove it without having to pull the water pump.

But manual will tell you to remove the water pump, which give you more room above it, to attach the lines once the compressor has been mounted first isntead.
