I have to decide whether to just replace the broken plastic bushing or replace both bushings, or replace the whole cable. I have not heard of many problems with the lower bushing connected to the tranny. The easy thing to do is just replace the broken bushing only.

Any tips on replacing the whole shifter cable, if I go that route?

Yea the $400 is bad enough to be sure....but its also the fact that if you get a new one its gonna be the same GM POS that broke prematurely in the first place....Thanks GM...

Mine broke on my 05 about three months ago at 130,000 miles. When I replaced the connectors I use two zip ties as extra precaution. Mine broke when it was in Drive and it took me a day of troubleshooting to figure out what the heck was going on. I was getting ready to replace the battery, starter, the relays and it drove me nuts. No more problems after that and if you haven't, get ready for the "old stuck in park" to happen.

Really makes one wonder when you constantly see these kind of threads about failing parts on relatively new cars,, WHY, well I know why but just sayin
Bad news travels faster than good news I guess

Snap on grommit cable retainer to the shaft was a bad idea from the start (in the name of product obsolescence) and how had would it for GM to just make the shaft a little longer with a groove channel for either one of these types of retainer isntead.

Hence it was not, and the whole ideas was a cheap replacement part, and lots of man hours needed for the dealers to replace the cable just out of warranty instead (why GM does not sell just the grommet either).

There's another saying similar to this one:

There are two kinds of people: people who have had bedbugs and people who are going to get them.

I least you're mechanically inclined enough to figure out what the problem was...not so much on my part...I'd be calling a flat bed.

The way I heard it was "There are old pilots and there are bold pilots but there are no old bold pilots".

Some time I'll have to share when my son and daughter borrowed my old '83 Bronco to pick up lunch and it died right in front of the drive thru window at Wendy's. The Wendy's crew had to come out and push it out of the way. It was interfering with their sales. Boy were my kids pissed!

Is this a problem on all C6 automatics? My 2010 has 41,000 miles on it. Sounds like it may be a ticking time bomb!

It is, apparently, a potential problem on all A6s.

Possibly.....it's caused a little bit of paranoia for some of the forum members, including myself. Won't take it out of drive while waiting in a drive through......don't use the shifter any more than necessary....etc....etc. Sad but true.......Thanks GM.......
