Gas Cap supposed to feel loose
2012 M6 Coupe
I've never had an issue, but it's always bothered me that my gas cap feels so loose when I fill up. Is it supposed to be that way? If I turn it just right, it kind of tightens up...but sometimes I turn and turn and it just keeps going. There doesn't seem to be a stop in place.
My girl's BMW has a gas cap that is super tight to twist on and off, which gives me a better fuzzy feeling.
What gives...by design I'm assuming, but wanted to double check with you guys.

Ok, thanks for the confirmation guys. Not sure why GM thought this was a good thing, or if it was just a byproduct of saving money. In any case, I'd rather have a cap which has better feedback to know it's locked in place.
Better yet, I'd rather have a system with no cap at all...but that's a bit much to ask I'm guessing.

Every vehicle I've owned in the last decade+ has been the same, just turn it until it clicks a couple of times. Some take a little more or less torque to start ratcheting. Nothing "locked" about it.

BMW's seem to be more sensitive about the gas cap being tight. On my wife's 330I, I have to tighten it as tight as I can or the check engine light will come on. This happens even with a brand new cap installed. Perhaps the Corvette has a better design, or better fitting gas cap. It's much easier to remove and reinstall, that's for sure.

Yep, don't push down on it, or it pushes the locking tabs out of alignment with the slots on the neck.
Hence the when the cap tabs cam over in the neck slots, it will draw the cap down to make a good seal of the O ring against the two.
And since the neck is plastic, this is the reason that it starts to click so soon, with so little turning pressure on the cap. Hence if allowed gorilla type pressure to be used before it clicked, you would snap the filler neck off isntead.

Vette is loose as described, Caddy is tight, and Subaru is tight. I guess there's no industry standard. But ... if you don't get it on right, you'll get a check engine light, and that may cause some other performance problems (in the Subaru, things don't work, like the cruise control, EyeSight, and most everything else) as long as the CEL is on.

My OEM used to click. I bought a black chrome cap with oem innards in it and it just tightens up, no clicking. So it must be in the outter part that wont let you over tighten it.

So with age, the white plastic part shrinks, and will cause less contact to the black part tabs.
As for the rubber seal, easy enough to just pull it off to clean it isntead.
But as stated, the cap is warrantied for 10 years since it part of the emissions system, and if you cap does is not locking before it clicks a few times/you are turning the cap without pushing down in it, GM will replace it for free isntead.
