Default Dexos/moble 1

Can I use MOBLE 1 instead of DEXOS in a 2012 Tahoe? I like to change my own oil and now that it is out of warranty I thought I would use MOBLE 1. Can DEXOS be bought at other places than the dealer? Thanks in advance.

The Mobil One that I have has the Dexos logo right on the front of the bottle.

Dexos is a spec, not a brand. Plenty of Dexos certified oils available at Wally World.

I believe Mobil 1 is better than the Dexos from the dealer which is a blend and not full synthetic.

True, Dexos does not have to be full synthetic, it can be a blend and still meet the spec.

Back when I had Camaros and Trans Ams in the 98-02 time frame they had same engine as Corvettes but just a year or so behind and did not come with Mobil1 but the vettes did!! I switched to Mobil 1 on my first oil change!! from 2011 on most cars require synthetic. The only synthetic oil that the chevy dealer i go to has is Mobil1 so they put mobil1 in my wifes equinox!! Just like my Corvette!! The guy said some of the cars now specify Dexos and not synthetic but I guess Dexos is same as synthetic? or might be GM version of Synthetic??

Dexos is a GM specification that started in 2011 for engine protection and engine oil life. It could be a high-quality synthetic blend or full synthetic. GM requires motor oil manufactures to pay a licensing fee to use the Dexos1 approved logo, so there are also several motor oils that exceed the spec that just don't pay to be on the approved list. Valvoline wasn't originally approved purely because they didn't pay for the license.

Although I run M1 in my Vette without issue, I didnt in my old f body cars. For whatever unknown reason those LS1 cars I had ate M1. I switched to Valvoline Synpower on an LS1tech suggestion and never had oil consumption issues again. Same viscosity, driving style, and everything. I'll maybe never know but a qt. every 1500 miles vs. maybe a half quart in 3k is huge.

As said, Dexos is a GM spec and not an oil formula. GM created a marketing/licensing opportunity with the Dexos brand.

The reason that more and more models are specifying synthetics is not driven by a mechanical requirement as much as it is driven by the EPA influencing manufacturers to extend oil change intervals. Also why we're seeing more "fill for life" components on cars.

Mobil 1 meets the spec but you can also buy a blended oil that is cheaper which meets the Dexos spec
