Default oil capacity

New to the c6 and waiting on the owners manuel. Am I correct in assuming that the oil capacity in the base 2013 is 10.5 quarts with filter? Seemed high as my 03 was 6.5 quarts.

I'm not sure how the oil pan size on the base 13 compares to that of my base 08, but my manual calls for 5.5 qts with filter obviously.

Wet sump motor (yours) is 6 qts.

I see your question was answered. You should know that if you search the internet, you can find a download of the owner's manual for your car that will provide immediate information.

Plus, a lot of times the electronic version is easier to use because you can enter keywords and do a search.

Your profile doesn't say what car you have so it could be either one. Need details...

The 2013 base (LS3) does not have a dry sump oiling system, so you need 5.5 quarts of oil with an oil filter change. That will take the oil right to the 'full' line on the dipstick.

Are you saying fill the filter (1/2 qt) and put 5 1/2 qts in the pan. The owner's manual specifies 6 qts with filter.
Just sayin...

Just put in enough oil to be at the correct place on the dipstick, whatever that amount is....assuming that it is not the dry sump system.

All I am saying is that his car takes a [total] of 5.5 quarts of oil.

I didn't say anything about filling the new filter with oil.

Drain the old oil ... install a new oil filter ... and then the engine will need a [total] of 5.5 quarts of oil.

That's what I do. Buy 6 qts, fill the filter first and pour the rest in the pan.

You can put a full 6.0 quarts of oil in it, but it will fill it slightly above the full mark on the dipstick

The 6 qt vs 5.5 qt controversy was resolved a few years ago, when it was found that several publications had conflicting information.

It seems that the chain oil changers (Quick Lube, etc) used the 6 qt number, because that's what the Z51 option with an oil cooler required. For them, it probably was safer to overfill non-oil cooler cars than to underfill those with a cooler. It was also easier if they used quart bottles to empty all 6, rather than meter out the last 1/2 quart, especially if a customer was watching.
So somewhere along the line, the people that create OM's and SM's got in on the 6 qt deal and failed to mention that the extra 1/2 qt was for cars with the external oil cooler.

So the simple thing to remember, is that wet sump LS2/3's take 5.5 qts (includes filter in all cases, since all cars have one), plus add another 1/2 qt if the car has an external oil cooler.

Exactly .... And since the OP has a base 2011, he does [not] have an external oil cooler ... So, his car will take a total of 5.5 quarts of engine oil to bring it to the full line on the dipstick.

Or, instead of arguing about how much it takes, just buy six, put in five, run engine to circulate, then add the sixth until the dipstick shows full. Or just continue the discussion of how much to put in...

There is no reason to bring logic into this discussion. It defeats the reason for all the oil change threads.
BTW, why don't we have a sarcasm emoticon?
