I fill the filter at least 3/4 with oil. Dip my finger in the oil and oil the gasket. Spin it on till the gasket just touches. Then 3/4 turn with a wrench which makes it easy to see 3/4. Never had a drop leak in 50 years doing it this way.

I've used several different designs and I prefer the cap type wrench. Wal-Mart sells them cheap.

How were you getting the old filter off if you don't have a filter wrench?

I had one a car just recently where the gasket had rolled out of the groove; never had one do that in my life. I always lube the gasket, it just popped up after install. I replaced it.....

FWIW: In a half century of ALWAYS changing my own oil on cars, trucks, motorcycles, and tractors I have NEVER had a filter that was a problem to get off, and have NEVER had a gasket that didn't come off with the filter. I ALWAYS rub new oil on the new filter gasket. All of this stuff is just done by rote, for me anyways. I was probably taught -- or subconsciously picked up -- most of this stuff when very young, by older gearheads that I knew.

As I previously posted I only hand-tighten except on rare occasions when a bit of snugging with a wrench is necessary.

Oh well, the world spins . . .

You must only change oil on your own cars. Oil filters are stuck all the time. Not on my iron mind you.
You never need more than hand tight. Unless you're a real wimp.
