Yep, button only.

The "key" is a proximity transmitter similar to a Mobil Speed Pass that activates the car when within one meter of it. You just leave it in your pocket, open the door, get in, step on the brake (auto) or clutch (manual), and push the button to start.

They explained it to us at the LA Auto Show yeaterday.

Cool, but it kinda takes the traditional phallic symbolism out of things.

Now it's more like "check out what's in my pocket baby".

Not to give anyone any ideas but that could potentially open the door for a new string of car theft...thief breaks into the car, ducks down and waits for owner to approach and when they get within one meter he/she hits the button and leaves. :steering:
I'm assuming that breaking into the car in the first place would activate the security system preventing any of this from happening?

I don't think the car will start until the fob is actually within the car.

Suppose you've walked up to the passenger door and it unlocks to load something on the curb side- what's to prevent a knowledgable thief from jumping in the driver's side and starting the car and taking off ? Would the motor shut off if the car is driven , say, more than 20 feet away from the transponder in your pocket to prevent this ?

Would the engine shut off once you got more than a meter away

I'm sure GM has thought up much more scenarios than any of us can and has taken the appropriate actions to prevent them from occurring. I'd say if anything the C6 is the most theft-proof Corvette yet. Everything is now electronic and your average joy riding car thief won't be able to just drill out the door as in the C5 and just bypass a resistor pellet. The car is now a much more difficult target.

No, the engine would not shut off when it is 20 meters away from the fob. But, once the engine is shut off it would not restart with the proximity fob.

Default Re: Is there a key hole for ignition?

This whole thing makes me a bit nervous! Computers have a tendency to fail, and remotes CERTAINLY do. For instance….it has happened to me twice (in probably 2 years) where the tire pressure sensors disappear while driving for a few minutes (and the car tells me I have to get them checked) – then they just come back on their own (and once after a re-start)! Or now, how my last working key fob (the other will constantly lock and unlock the car repeatedly as it is stuck in passive mode) requires that you be right next to the driver door for it to work (new batteries don’t help). And everyone knows about the great column lock conspiracy that has C5 owners praying when they put their key in the ignition.

Anyhow…don’t get me wrong. I like a great deal of what the C6 has to offer (some of my styling hesitations may be done away with by actually seeing the thing). But, these kind of things freak me out a bit. No key at all…completely relying on transmitters? Cool concept, but dang that makes me a little nervous! What kind of “column lock” stories do you think the C6 forum will be filled with in years to come!!!! Hopefully none! Fingers crossed!!!

Now, GM should have fixed this since they can drive the car somewhere and part it out ... they should have design if the fob is at a certain short distance, the car will die ...
Does it have battery check up? Since the car won't start if the fob battery goes north :D

If the system is the same as the caddy's, here are some details. This does not answer all of our questions, though, but it is interesting.
http://www.cadillac.com/cadillacjsp/...eature=keyless

The car will start only if the FOB is in the vehicle.

I read somewhere that there are manual door releases in the trunk, so if your battery dies in the fob, you're not stranded :D

Now, just relax! The system uses technology that has been in this car for several years. The ignition is controlled by the column lock controller so you have real "redundancy" in the operating system. It will NEVER fail, honest! :lolg:

Apparently in the caddillac XLR (uses same system), the DIC will state that the fob is not present or low battery due to dead or low fob battery, and you can place it into some kind of fob pocket in the glove box, to get the car started. Mabey being in close proximiy to the pocket in the glove box it works by energizing the fob circuit board through induction or something from soming behind the pocket or mabey like a highway toll booth easy pass batteryless tag works.
