Default 100,000,000th small block Chevy V8 is LS9!

The 100,000,000th small block Chevy engine is being built today at Wixom. An LS9 was chosen for this honor!

The small block Chevy V8 was first sold in 1955 and has been a customer favorite ever since. (But of course you know that!)

This engine will likely be a museum treasure and we have many guests, involved with engine development and production, taking part in this build.

Seems appropriate that the 100,000,000th small block built by GM is the baddest of them all!

This is great, congrats to the Wixom Wizards, glad this didn't go to St. Catharines, they don't deserve it, but I would have been happy with Tonawanda too, since all those nasty 427s came out of there, but Wixom is the best. But who's name goes on that plate?

Don,

I hope that you get to do the honors and have your name plate afixed to that engine. Your advice has been terrific and I appreciate your dedication to our Corvette addiction.

Major milestone and the strongest V8 of the firm's history captures it.

Cool.

Thank you my friend! I appreciate your support, but we did this one the only fair way. It was a true team build!

We all shared the honors on this LS9 build. In fact many of our guests also had a share in this one. For example, when Rich was stuffing pistons he actually had eight different people doing one each. Most of the guests were media folks or former execs that had a big role in the design and evolution of the small block Chevy V8.

I was assigned to do station 4 - so I torqued the conn rods, installed oil deflector, did turning torque, installed crank sprocket, timing chain, cam sprocket and tensioner - all with a little help from my friends!

When the build was complete, there was a nice presentaion to commemorate the event. All in all it was an exciting day at Wixom -
we were honored to do build #100,000,000!!

Here's a peek at the name tag on this build:

After posting this story on the NCRS forum, I got nothing but negative reactions, seems they don't like the current small blocks being included with the old school stuff.

They've obviously never driven a ZR1!

Old school is great and I get that but what GM has done with the modern-day small block is nothing short of amazing.

You're correct about all that. You know the saying at NCRS, perfection in all things, no matter how mundane and unimportant.

An OHC engine would spin 1,000rpm higher all other things being equal at the cost of additional weight way up high.

There is nothing wrong with the small block design in my book. Nice power to weight ratio. Some 6 cylinder engines weigh more then the small block V8. Elegant simplicity. Try rebuilding an LT5.

The small block has proven itself over and over again, 100 million times. Congratulations are in order.
