[ZR1] 2012 ZR1 vs. 2013 GT500

I'll admit it, i will also admit that it is fun driving a muscle car with over 1000rwhp. We ran over 200mph at the Texas mile with the SS KB 3.6 and no other power adders. Now i am going to throw a Th400 in it and go after some 8's with it. It is all for fun, and i have alot of fun with this car.
But the gt500 is olny good at going straight, anything else it is going to suck really bad.

Again, I'm a big '13 GT500 fan. I've read all the articles on the car and think it's going to be awesome, but for twisty track stuff, it's just the wrong car to buy for $65k. I haven't heard MSRP being officially announced but if it's $65k, it's $10k more than the ZL1, so that's pretty aggressive for Ford to think it's worth that much more than a ZL1. Secondly, if it is $65k and you want to do track work, you can buy a new Z06 (with discounts) that will put the hurt on a GT500 around the track especially if you put the sport cups tires on the Z06.

All this was pretty much my standpoint. Even if one dropped the weight of the GT500 600 lbs and was pushing 700hp at the tires, you still have to worry about the poor aero, solid axel, and reducing that much weight is going to cause the car to be very front heavy.

I think the name calling can stop. No need to get emotional.
I've owned many Mustangs and a couple of Cobra's, but it is an apples to oranges comparison. The Mustang is an American icon as is the Vette, but save the comparison for the Camaro. The Vette is in a different league.
Anyway, the new Boss 302 is a better all around car when compared to the GT500, IMO.

Making Some Use of This Thread
Back in 01 and at the same time I picked up a Z06, there was a limited production mustang with an independent rear suspension.
I think it was called an "R" something and was very expensive (at least 15 grand MORE than my Z06 was) but was not any faster.
All this goes to show if Ford is going to try to make one particular model mustang compete against one particular model of a vette, the mustang is going to cost way more than the vette will....... and who in their right mind would ever pay more for a mustang than they would a vette.
That is why the "R" independent suspension equipped mustang FAILED

Well my vote for the poster's "friend" challenge is biased toward the side of the ZR1 even if the Cobra was to be "Frankenstein'd". The car is not designed with characteristics to handle ZR1 speeds on a road course. To their credit, Ford has a production Mustang called M-FR500-CJ made specifically for NHRA racing requirements that the buyer can custom order. They sell 50 units annually and if you fully opt the car, the sticker price butts up to the ZR1 price tag. My point is that the car can be made to run fast down the strip but is limited on how far it can be enhanced for the road course. Ford engineers know that and would probably have a road course custom order Mustang avail if it could safely be taken much beyond the factory Shelby. IMHO

So my friend and I were having a debate on the legitamacy of the 2012 ZR1. His argument is that the ZR1 is way overprice and overrated. He said he could buy a 2013 GT500 w/ the performance package and track package for $65,000 and with the remaining $45,000 he saved by buying the cheaper of the two cars, he would modify it and it would beat the ZR1 around the infamous Nurburgring racetrack. I went on to say that there is no way, the GT500 is too heavy, not aerodynamic enough, and not refined enough to post a time better than 7:19.63. Any other opinions on this debate?

Ford sells a much faster mustang than the Gt500. Can't remember what its called but they run 8s off the showroom floor. Someone mentioned it earlier.
Found it. Its the Mustang Cobra Jet. Runs 120k. Look it up on youtube if you want to see a seriously fast car.

overlooked
I don't know if it is intentional but no one has mentioned the other value of a ZR1 that a stick built Mustang would not have. A 3 year factory warranty!!!!
