Default The positives and drawbacks of running Large Cam!!

Gentleman, I am getting ready for my 08 Z06 build!! finally, just came off a 1100 RWHP Twin Turbo SRT8 300, This Z06 I've been planning for awhile now, had to find a prestine used Black Z06, and I did, JC from H and H Corvettes out of Fern Park Florida, delivered sight un seen to me, every thing he promised, really, for 4 years old and 6,000 miles, this Vette is absolutely perfect!!! so, my build will start as , Head and Cam, Fast Intake, 102 TB, Long Tube Headers, ATI Damper, Clutch etc.... the most important part, the cam, what are the The positives and drawbacks of running a large cam, I would like a lopey, torquey, powerfull, broad powerband, but, if a large cam is nothing but tweeking and surging etc???? I'll go more mild , any feedback appreciated! Thanks in advance!!

I have pretty much the same set up as what you describe here. Ported GM heads, headers, big cam, Callaway CAI, Corsa extreme exhaust, & tune. I the car is crazy fast and just runs great all the time (although I really only drive it on weekends to car shows & cruise ins). The biggest downside of a big cam is when your in stop & go traffic it is just terrible. You almost always have to have the clutch in because the car bucks badly it just wants to go. So if you can live with that then I say go for it. I am in FL and had my Z trailered up to Tony's Corvette shop in Gaithersburg, MD. I believe they are one of the best corvette modifiers and performance builders in the country. Just my opinion.

If you are looking for a lopey idle and some killer mid-range torque, seriously research the Katech Torquer 110. That with the headers and the Fast LSX-R intake should work together very well. For driving on the street, mid-range torque is everything. If you are looking to be a "Dyno King", go bigger on the cam. Of course, if your main goal is racing, the bigger cams provide more top end horsepower. However, the more duration the cams have, the more you will have to compromise your driveability. I have known dozens of guys that got carried away with hopes of the most horsepower they could get and then got really tired of living with their car on the street and lost interest in their project.

I went with Ragin Racin and the STRIKER II cam 240/260 .661 .661 109. I have full bolt ons except for heads but on 91 it made 578/520. Its a big cam but i have a great tune and im able to drive it daily with no problems. It does buck and surge under 2500 rpm though. Good luck with your new Z and enjoy.

Thanks for the feedback, any more examples of cam profiles and why they work or don't would be great, the cam is the only sticking point, we are close, I'm just so impressed with the stock power! these cars rip!strong!! gotta love the power these 427's have! just when I believe I'm at redline, I look down and still have a way to go! I thought my head and cam 04 C5 with headers, tq vrtr etc, would be as strong as my Z06, not even close, the dyno numbers would lead anyone to think the C5 should be quicker, not even close!! I'm impressed with the Z!! I'll be posting as the build progresses, the American Racing Headers are in, just waiting on the rest.

Hit up Charlie@R.P.M motors or Ryne@CMS they can spec you a great cam, from some reading they've posted you dont need a huge cam to make great power in these cars

i think a nice medium sized cam, something roughly in the 230-240 range will likely fit the bill with a nice lopey idle but with nice street manners, pm me if you have any questions

Cam specs will be suggested from Pat @ Guerra Motorsports, 2008 Corvette with 427 LS7 short block, milled 65cc LS7 heads, GM LS9 gasket, FAST 102 intake, ported 90mm TB, manual trans, 3.42 gear, 1 7/8" headers with dual cats, 6800 rpm shift points, 7000 rev limiter. I have the specs, not finalized yet, I don't feel like they would want me to post all the info!! Guerra spec'd my C5 a couple months ago, car is wicked!!!! sounds out of this world!!!! Like I said, I'll be following up.

I just did the Katech Torquer 110 with Kooks 1 7/8" headers with cats, a Halltech MF-103 CAI. I also did the muffler mod. It's a very streetable cam with lots of torque and sounds Great!!

The cam specs are... Duration: 220/244; Lift: 0.615/0.648; SA: 110; Overlap: 12

This is how it sounds......

Sounds great. On a side note, I was LMAO at your dog. He is a TRUE champ. The sound of the exhaust and cam did not scare him one bit, LOL. When you started the car, he went near the engine bay to listen in, and once you turned it off, he headed to the camera.
