Default Inexpensive upgrade: 2012 steering wheel

For under $250 bucks shipped, and a very casual 40 minute start to finish install here's the results!!!

Very comfortable with the thumb grips and a more elegant look with the tiny chrome accents and black spokes rather than those ugly brushed spoke covers.

Thank you Rich from Abel Chevrolet...

That's awesome, did you have to change the airbag too?

Nope, original airbag. It's a simple plug and play install.

Here's the thread I followed for the install instructions done by Dreamin.

He deserves a thank you as well...

I did my ZO6 with this wheel stitched in red and I got the new airbag with the ZO6 logo. Awesome. Love the wheel and the new logo, and I got to keep my original wheel which is nice. Way better design and the little chrome trim fits right in with the console trim and gives a much more polished look. Thanks to Gene on this one!

Thanks for mentioning the fact that you got to keep the original wheel "no core charge".

Here's a couple more pics.

The 2012s come with the ZR1 logo on the airbag cover. You can also buy a complete airbag with the ZR1 logo for $180 but....I have heard that something to do with the wiring has changed. Some say they'll work, some say probably and some say "no". I really don't want to be the Guinea pig so I kept my original airbag with the flag logo.

Wish someone would just confirm for sure about the airbags. I had mine installed at the dealer (the airbag issue being one of the main reasons) and they said it was fine or they would not do it there. They will not install any modified steering wheels there either. The logos are way better and look great, but I would like to hear from GM or someone in the know whether there is an issue with those airbags on an earlier model car or not. Mines an 08.

I had read about this a few months ago and wondered why almost everyone wasn't upgrading to the '12 steering wheel. One of the cheapest looking things on our $100k+ car's interior is the ghetto gray plastic on the steering wheel.

I need up go ahead and order a new steering wheel too. For less than $250 and an easy install, it's a no brainer.
