Yes, I have driven a ZR1 on the track and it's great, but it doesn't feel so visceral and responsive to me as does the LS7. Now, If I were going for a 'throw me in my seat' street car, I'd go with the ZR1's LS9 all day long. But the question posed on this thread was a track-use question, which I only gave my personal opinion based on my experience with different types of engines and their heating issues in a track setting.

Look up MotorTrends comparison of the 2013 ZR1 and 2013 Z06 with Z07 package on YouTube to get a glimpse of what I'm trying to explain here.

I'd be the first to say that my 550 HP supercharged 2005 FordGT is so-so on the track, but by far the most comfortable and best street cruiser I've ever driven, period...a true GT car.

Don't get me wrong, the ZR1 is a total bad-*** car, but the Z06 WITH Z07 package is just a better track set-up: lighter, carbon ceramics (like ZR1), naturally aspirated, etc.
I will bow to your superior knowledge about track racing, especially considering I do my racing 1/4 or 1/2 mile at a time and in a straight line!! My "twisties" are On/Off ramps and around the hood only.

Zr1 hands down, but look for a 2010 and newer model. You can get zr1's all day long now it seems for the 65k mark for a great condition example and on track with a few mods thats where its at.

My buddies in their full track prep z06's are always chasing after me... the torque grunt of the zr1 down low puts buslengths on the z06 out of the hole...

Since you are looking at a carbon edition z07, brakes are the same, and they are heavenly.... I do nothing but track my ZR1- I came from a boss 302, then a grand sport and went through this same path , and when all my Z06 buddies are playing catchup, lol, it reaffirms my choice...

I think the ZR1 is MUCH MORE viseral and RESPONSIVE than my Z06 ever was! The ZR1 hands down, crazy on the street, beast on the track and bulletproof. What else do you need?
Yeah few bolts on brings 800HP easy...

If you want 800 HP reliably you probably want the ZR1. But you need to do the cooling mods first else your IATs will be out of control. Been there, done that.

I'm reading about the lack of PTM and Launch control on the 09 ZR1, should this be my decision point? The ZR1 has headers but other than that it's stock, the Z06 is totally stock. I'm going to mod the car so I understand the Z06 is on the with 505 but squeeze 800 but for how long?

Any help would be great!

I think you guys have helped me decide on the ZR1, I did some checking as well on the just how much HP you can throw at he block and its rated to handle 900 HP. I do like the Z06 and having a 10 model was really fun. I just know I would need more HP at some point and the Z06 is for 550HP. I have friends who have destroyed their motor or reached the edge and eventually went to a LSX block for more power.

I've found a 2010 ZR1 for a good price but the 09 has LG long tube SS headers already and its a mod I don't have to do, so what are your thoughts? What are the HP gains with the headers ? What can I expect to find with this mod the dealer doesn't know? Should I avoid this vehicle based on the mod? I've yet to see either of these cars but will in a few days.

For mods, look towards a lingenfelter 710 or 750 kit, its not that expensive, and should give you a definite power boost.. Headers are 1k, and by themselves, dont give a lot of power compared to pulley swaps on the supercharger. If you do both, then you see the best gains!

All

I'm the proud owner of a Black 2010 ZR1 with only 9k miles, I had to do some searching traveled far to get her but she is in the garage. Thanks to everyone who responded to the post. I put 480 miles on her last night on a long drive, one thing I don't like is the inability to play my Pandora stations and the Nav sucks! I didn't buy for that so I'm very happy!

i dont think that guy in a Z06 was driving very fast... when u in the Zr1 passed him he short shifted to 4th gear LOL that video proofs nothing

i also been on a track with Zr1s and yes they are fast but most ppl cant drive them

Sounds of a 750hp ZR1 passing a 600hp Z06 at Sebring Raceway - YouTube

Mukak- the z06 and I are friends. He's on the board he too. He has years of experience on me, but his car can't keep up with mine. The torque down low, and ceramic brakes are my major advantage, as well as about 100 wheel hp, but he's significantly lighter that me so our "power" is similar with that factored in.

Yes I short shifted, it is only fair to let someone by when they are on a fast lap. The videos intent was for the fantastic sound a warmed ZR1 makes.
The ZR1 is a sweet platform to play with.

Oddly we seem to run within a tenth or so on different tracks and same tires. That out of the hole punch of a ZR1 is awesome, and Sebring eats C6Z brakes.
