They use a dial gauge to measure the amount of wiggle (lateral movement) in each of the valves. Too much movement is usually a precursor to an impending engine failure. Chevrolet maintains that there is not an unusually high failure rate of the LS7 but many here think that there is. The head corvette tech that did the inspection told me that they had never had a LS7 fail at their dealership.

I don't know how his were inspected but east Coast Supercharging had a video showing inspection with a dial indicator. They had removed valve cover and valve spring to inspect. They did say the problem exists in a small % of the cars.
