I spent a few years working with bearing companies on bearing designs. Try finding a bearing that can be put in a vacuum (no grease, liquids, or materials that outgas), handle a 50lb rotating mass spinning at 60k RPM while it is mounted on a part that is spinning putting 20+Gs of force on it. I much rather design blower bearings that X-ray tube bearings for CT scanners. At least you can use oil and stuff to cool them.

Just so you don't think I'm full of it (well, you can for other reasons), here is the Camaro we are dealing with.

So can the F1A be upgraded to an F1A-94 if it's just a volute and impeller change?

It can, it's Volute/Impeller and seals. ~~ 1,600 bucks shooting from the hip off the top of my head.
