Default What is your .5 mile trap speed?

Hi guys,

I'm registered in the wannagofast event for Hot Springs, VA in May and I'm curious how fast you guys are going in these types of races?

My car should be a nudge over 1k whp and race ready but I have no idea what to expect. I've drag raced many times but never attended a .5 mile event like this. I'm going over my car with a fine toothed comb since I'm a little nervous and excited about the potential trap speeds!

I have run the same event in Chicago twice. With your power you will be 150 plus easily! Brakes are critical as the end of the runway comes up fast at that speed. The top speeds at the two events I ran in were 208 and 218 both Nisson GTRs. Be safe and have fun and use your first run to get the feel of everything and then go for it but stay in your comfort zone!!

I would think you would be higher than 150 by a substantial amount. 1000+ hp car is a 150-160mph in the 1/4 usually, I'd guess 170+mph. Tire size, gearing, and throwing 5th will all play a roll I would imagine.

Guy I know ran 156 with under 600whp two years ago at the Chicago event. You should be in the 170's easy with 1000whp

Traps are all over the place. DA and track makes a huge difference. Like how Sinisster went 200+ at one event then 180s at another with more power.

That being said, here they do the rolling 1/2 mile, 40mph starts. Stock z06s were 150-152. Heads cam cars 160-162. ~800rwhp zr1 did 174. My best at around 850rwhp was 178.5. Traction was the issue, not power. Couldn't hook well until 100+, so speed really depending on how well 2nd gear hooked up.

If you hook, 1000rwhp standing start should be solid 180s if weather is nice, no head wind/wind, and track hooks decent. Some of them are horrible compared to others.

600 rwhp and did consistant 161-162 over 2 years at chicago. and there was more than enough room for braking... as long as your brakes work.

Looks like he was running the mile.

With 1K whp, You should be 170-175. I ran 174 in the half at the Texas Mile a couple of years ago. This speed was slow compared to most at my final mile speed. Good luck and have fun-be safe.

With 1080 whp I've been very consistent in the 184-186 range trapping in the half. Seen over 30 passes now. When I was 950 range I was turning 177s/179s

Have some recent mods to the car, thinking it will put it around 1130-1200 hoping to break the 190 barrier with it.

Your car, and with how well you shift from spectating you over the years, would be much faster in the 1/2 mile than what you've run. You're limited to your tires due to Texas Mile rules. Put a drag radial on your car, and you'd be seeing 180's in Houston.

At 800hp on a Novi 1500, I ran 171.5. Ran out of gear and probably would have hit 173ish but didn't want to shift a few hundred feet before the traps. It was the first ever 1/2 mile event so nobody really had an idea of what size tire/gears to run so I just drove it in full street trim.

Thanks for all the info everyone! I'm using Mt 345/35/18 tires on the car now and just upgraded to a RKT TR6060 ZR1 ratio transmission so I hope my gear and tires will be good for se fun. My car is a twin turbo setup with and electronic boost controller so maybe I'll start out with less power and work my comfort level up some. I did go ahead and order a complete 6 point Wolfe roll cage and harnesses for safety.

Be prepared for traction issues. It's a non-track prepped surface. Granted I ran street tires with a boost leak (8psi vs 12psi) and hit 161-162mph consistently.

Just to give you an idea how variable traction is this was me on street tires at the WannaGoFast event in Ocala. First run was a Z06 I lost to that had 680rwhp I have 640rwhp on same mustang dyno. He was on drag radials and me on street tires. Hung with him all the way to the end. I had a boost leak only making 8psi that day instead of typical 12psi. Then it's me against my friend's GTR. I got higher MPH but AWD made it much easier during the event for just about everyone. Lastly destroyed a CTS-V.

(don't mind me not wearing helmet, I got lazy on putting it on for one of the runs)

Thanks for all the info! I'm excited to see how well the car does. I'm going through all the safety checks now to make sure everything is tip top shape for the race.
Anyone had any traction control/stability system hick ups at high speeds?

Awesome, what will that setup be and how much power are you hoping for? I just hope my car stays together for this race. I'm going to an aftermarket block sometime this year but I'm trying to get moved into the new house, get the dyno and shop setup first. I have a task list longer than my car to complete before I have time to change anything else on my setup.

My first time out, my best of 4 runs was 169.81.
1st run was a test, not a lot of room to brake
2nd run i did not run out 1st 2nd or 3rd
3rd run i did not run out 1st or 2nd ran the 169.81
4th run popped my charge pipe off the car, called it a day

All runs were on a 295/40/17 Mickey Thompson ET Street Radial II.
My car was at 845 rearwheel. Full weight.
I think i can get high 170s out of it.

Your car should go mid 180s i would think.

Im going to do it again April 25th

^295/45-17's? Same tire I ran. You're going to need a higher redline than what I had(6800rpm). It's also dependent on what rim you put them on. The wider the rim, the less they will inflate. I just ran out of runway with that tire at 800hp, but my car made good torque. I ran it on a 9 inch rim for the 1/4 mile, and a 9.5 inch wheel for the half mile. I wouldn't go wider than 9.5 inches on that tire and run it out to 7200+rpm to avoid 5th
