Default Knock Retard

How much knock retard is acceptable? Or should k/r be at "0" under all circumstances?

I advanced the spark 2 degrees and my car felt awesome but I was seeing up to 2 degrees total K/R at times. When I backed off the spark advance to + 1 and then 0 degrees advanced the car felt softer. Can anyone give me a quick lesson on K/R? Why does the car feel stronger at +2 degrees but showing some k/r?

Most vehicles will make more power with less timing and no KR as opposed to more timing with KR.

Thanks
