Default knock on WOT

Hi Guys,

I have a question

Apologies I dont have too much information as am quite new to the tuning side so dont understand to much, my car is being tuned by New Era Performance ( USA ) but in Dubai the guy Mike flys in and does it in person.

I have a 2006 Z06 with MSD , Nick Williams 102, stock heads with upgraded valve train and springs, ARH headers with no CATs and a B&B fusion 3 inch exhaust, BTR Stage 3 cam with there valve spring kit.

the car makes good power and torque down but apparnetly mike says he should be able to put around 8 more degrees into the WOT however the car is showing knock at this stag.

any ideas on what this is being caused?

how do i start to identify ? , when we tuned the car in stock form with just intake there was no knock and he said on the Z06s he has tuned they havent shown knock like this.

any help is appreciated.

Your tuner needs to identify whether in fact you have real knock retard or "false Knock retard"-----Real knock often if bad can be heard audibly ----But most often certain mods will create false knock------False knock is created by almost all your mods--Especially your LT headers---The thinner walls of the LT's will create new strange noises that the knock sensors will interpret as knock---- Same goes for an aftermarket cam or even a valve train upgrade that although is stronger it is noisier----If on the dyno or on a street tune if you don't hear any detonation---most likely it's false knock---very very common--
A tuner can " desensitize" your knock tables to eliminate the false knock---

Yes it seems like it's false knock - well get him to adjust the knock tables.

Thanks for explaining everything , I did hear about headers / cam etc causing false knock

It seems the knock is only after a certain rpm which I think was about 4K

He just needs to be really careful not to overdo it. You want the sensors to still work correctly when needed which is easier said than done

The great thing about tuning is that you can desensitize the knock sensors exactly where in the RPM range you begin to pick it up and not globally across the entire RPM range---Typically around 1600 RPM's is where you will get some knock--as this is where while cruising and rolling on the throttle detonation will occur and you actually would want some timing removed--but above that is normally after you hit WOT and is where you do not want any knock whether real od false

Yeah mine was making it around 3/4K up red line I think

Having said that I just replaced a knock sensor as it was destroyed from headers so maybe will solve the problem. Name: photo923.jpg

Yeah, I doubt you were getting a reliable reading from that

Yeah they must have been rubbing on my Arh headers and popped when braking for the turn 1 from 250kmh , I was on a track day and fluid caught fire. Attachment 47934892Attachment 47934891

Ouch!

If you got out of that without burning the car down then I'd be happy with the outcome considering!

z062.hpl

z061.hpl

heres a couple of logs since i replaced the knock sensor.

i have knock on load in like 5th gear but this mimics the gear linkage noise i have at like 1500 RPM in 5th gear under load.

I've looked through the log fairly well and literally every place there's knock (except for I believe one) it's when you go into power enrichment mode. I would be very cautious about believing it to be false knock. I don't really think it is personally.

I would pull at least a few degrees of timing out in the areas that are worst and see what happens

Thanks for this I will get my guy to do this and see if it makes and difference

Just seemed weird when driving I got the gearbox linkage noise / chatter under load and the Knock was going same time if I shifted into 3/4 it didn't do it but 5th was making the knock

Before we had a lot of knock high up in rpm so that looks to be a lot better than before.
