Default Operating a scan tool

The instructions with my scan tool say to plug it in with the ignition off then turn the ignition on but don't start the engine. How exactly do I do this on a 2012 which doesn't have a key? How do I turn the ignition on and not start the car? Stupid question but this the newest car I have owned. Thanks for any assistance.

Holding the bottom of the start button down for ~5-10 seconds works on all of them for sure, but I know on a manual at least you can just press the green button without holding the clutch and it will power the car on.

Thanks for the info guys. I should have said it was an automatic. I'll try pushing the start button w/o hitting the brake. That will probably do it
