Default VETTE-AIR....Blows dirt into the engine bay....Here's my solution.....

After I installed the Vette-Air, one thing became very clear to me:
The Vette-Air blows in A LOT of air.

I know this because I started to notice dust, dirt, and other debris accumulating around the air filter, in the radiator shroud area, as well as in the engine bay.
This was not good.

I was determined to find a way to filter out the debris, while maintaining the air flow.
So, I started to think of ways to create a filter for the Vette-Air.

On my first attempt, I duct taped a piece of furnace filter material over the Vette-Air opening in the radiator shroud.
This actually filtered out the dust & debris very well.
But, would you believe it……the strength of the air flow actually started to force the duct tape away & it was coming detached.

While the engine heat could have something to do with the duct tape failing, it was obvious that the air coming through the Vette-Air was immense.

I needed a better solution.

Now, I think I may have permanently solved the problem.

I purchased a roll of ¼” x ¼” galvanized metal wire mesh from a local hardware store.
This would be the material that I'd use to hold the furnace filter material in place.

Using an 8 ½ x 11 piece of paper, I made a template which completely covers the Vette-Air opening.
Using that template, I made the filter cover out of the wire mesh.
I then wrapped the rough edges with black duct tape.

Below are pix of the finished piece:

Below is the installed Vette-Air filter I made:

You’ll see that the wire mesh completely covers the furnace filter material & holds it securely in place over the Vette-Air opening.

There were already 2 holes in the metal panel in front of the air filter.
I used plastic push pins (like those on the fender wells) to secure the wire mesh in place.
Using the push pins makes it easy for me to replace the filter material.

I think it turned out really well.
What do you think?

Very nice job! Looks great!

How well does it flow air to the air filter now that you have a filter over the Vette-Air opening?

I had the filter over the opening (held down with duct tape) for about 2 months.
By the seat-of-my-pants, I could tell any diference in power.

I still can't tell any difference - but I feel a lot better knowing that dirt won't get into the engine compartment.

Great Idea! You should sell that idea to Vette Air!

Good idea but I would stop at the wire only, no filter. That has got to impeded the air flow which defeats the purpose of putting in the vett air in the first place. The wire only solution will at least keep out leaves and other larger debris but allow unimpeded air flow. IMHO.

I chose to use a very unrestrictive furnace filter material for that reason.
It will not only block out sand, pebbles & leaves, but dust too.

The way I look at it, the filter material that I used is A LOT less restrictive than the material used on the air filter.

IMO, lowering air temperature at the intake is the critical issue here, not just the air flow.
Even with a filter material in place, the Vette-Air will still bring in a substantial amount of relatively cool air.

Vette-airs are great add-on to the stock 08/Z intake.
But the vararam scoups filtered air to the motor.
with no dust under the hood.

Does anyone have any evidence that the vette-air actually helps 1/4 mile et and trap speed?

I have a K&N intake, but I'm not convinced that the vette-air is that much better than just a propped open shroud, although if it is then I'd like to get one

Like everyone else, I did a lot of research before I bought my intake setup.
I found that a lot of people were not happy with the quality of the Vararam, and that it was very difficult to install.

I ended up going with a more conventional intake system.
I'm convinced that the Halltech Killer Bee is one of the the highest quality & most free-flowing intakes available.

If you package it with the Vette-Air, you can get the whole setup for about $500.

I also think that the Vette-Air forces a lot more fresh air directly towards the intake than the free cold-air mod (propping the shroud open).

However, if I would have known how much dirt would get into the engine compartment with the Vette-Air, I may have made a different choice.

Regarding performance.....

I installed the Killer Bee first.
By the SOTP, the throttle response was noticably more immediate.
I don't race my Vette, so I can't give you any real numbers.

About 2 weeks later, I installed the Vette-Air.
I didn't really notice a difference.

The only way you could really tell is by logging IAT'S and ET times. Frankly I dont see much ET difference between your current set-up, a Brand X filter with Vette-Air and CAI's like Vararam, Xcelerator, Callaway etc., no matter the manufacturer claims. Though am sure the IAT's would be lower for a true closed system CAI (Vararam, Callaway etc.) over a warm air type system.

As for dust & debris, I appears the Vette-Air is the worst and the front snorkel types (Vararam etc.) being so-so with quick to dirty the filters. I got no dust or debris with the free cold air open shroud as well as my current Xcelerator (Callaway clone) cut shroud CAI is clean as a whistle too.

Well that blows....no pun intended .
Just bought a Vette-Air but I'm not sure I'm going to put it in now if it pulls in a crap-load of dirt/dust into the engine bay. I guess it depends on what a crap-load is doesn't it.

Has anyone done any IAT measurements with and without the Vette-Air on a Killer Bee or Stinger setup?
