Default Front Brake Pads/Rotors

I am sure there are posts about brake pads/rotors but for some odd reason every time I do a search it keeps timing out on me.

I have a 2005 C6 w/Z51 package with 20K miles. One of the shops I talked with suggested replacing the rotors. Is it common to replace the rotors with only 20K miles?

The local dealer suggested maching the rotors if that was needed.

Thanks in advance.

If you race your car, it's possible you may need to replace your rotors. But under normal --not sure what ‘normal’ is for a Vette owner- they shouldn't need replacing. I have about 24K on my 06 and they look new - but then, so do my pads. Now I don’t track my car and I drive mostly on backroads in or around New England.
Before spending the $$ on new rotors I'd check to see if they're warped or have worn unevenly due to possible debris like stones. You’ll know if they are badly warped if you sense pulsing (not the activation of the ABS) or uneven stopping when applying the brakes hard. You can check them for warping yourself by taking the wheel off and spinning the rotors and either using a screw driver resting on the caliper or the preferred method of using a dial indicator mounted on a stand.

Thanks for the reply. I am not an agressive daily driver and have only tracked the car twice and never really pushed the car to its limits - basically did not break 100mph on the track. I think I will go to the dealer and have them look at it. Dealers prices are competitive.

I replaced my pads with ceramics at 22K and the rotors were just fine (06 Z51). I replaced the pads to get rid of the dust problem. The pads I took off had less than 50% wear. Your rotors should be fine if they have had normal use. There are a lot of people out there trying to sell rotors to unsuspecting owners.

Since your search isn't working - I had posted a similar thread and the consensus was that under normal driving conditons, shouldn't need to change or machine the rotors at the first brake pad change.

When I was at Spring Mountain last year, I asked what tire life the got. They told me about 1K miles, and they usually change brake pads when they do tires- without turning or changing the rotors.
IMHO rotors are seldom in need of turning or replacing on a street-driven car.
