Default A different way to get fresh air to the intake

Guys,

I've been analyzing the different ways owners have modded their cars to get fresh air to their intakes. Most prople have cut the top of the radiator shroud to get fresh air to the intake.....I did it a little different. Instead making openings on the top part of the shroud, I cut openings on the side. I did this for 2 reasons:

1- With the air coming from the side, it doesn't hit the filter directly, thus not interfeering with the ultra-sensitive MAF. Other systems such as the Vette Air scoop has been shown to throw the MAF off.

2- In the event I hit water puddles somewhat fast, the water should be deflected to the side, thus avoiding the filter and hydrolock.

Anyway, question or comments; I'm all ears!

Seems like a good way to get cold air. The airaid already blocks much of the engine compartment heat. Any way to check AITs moving and stationary?

I'm going to get me a scan tool from the local O'Reillys and check on the temp at different points. Regardless, whis will help with fresh air from the moment you start moving.

Looks good to me but for the LS2's I like the "free air mod" by opening the bottom of the shroud. I know it wont work for ther LS3 Z51 option and I think it might cause LS3 Maf problems too.

Yes, the MAF on the LS3 is extremely sensitive. I took my leaf blower and blew some air on the OEM housing and just about killed the engine.

The engine compartment will get fairly dirty, if that bothers you.

I'm very interested to see what your IAT 's are with these holes cut. Also how fast they come down after sitting in traffic or at a light and then start moving again. Let us know what you find out.

A couple of forum members are using this..You can mount it in the car and it does everything a handheld scan tool does..

Well, I don't want to buy a scan tool. I just want to borrow one from the auto part and check on the numbers.

This is interesting. Well, I was going to get one of those Vette-Air scoops...

The thing is, if Vette-Air can disturb the MAF, then how come Vararam works? You'd think that would be worse than the Vette-Air. Just thinking aloud...

This is the way I did it also. Works great. No cutting at all. I have a Halltech Venom w/beehive cover. This pretty much keeps the warm engine air from getting to the filter. All I am getting is fresh air. Engine compartment is also not getting dirty.

I've seen a couple of posts on the issue.

I have often though about this. All I can think of is that, from the tip of the scoop on the VR to the MAF, there is quite a distance. By the time the air gets to the MAF, it is already flowing nice and linear, instead of turbulent.
I does happen with the Vette Air though.

It actually does happen with the Vararam too in some cases. Mine had low rpm surging which others have also complained about. That LS3 MAF is really sensitive. People have also had surging problems with the Callaway Honker, BPP Vortex, and Halltech Killer Bee/Vette-Air combo. Callaway has actually designed a peice to help with the issue.

Well, I'm glad I cut the holes on the side of the shroud instead of the top.

Yeah let me know what your IAT's are with those cut into the side. I went back to stock but have been thinking about doing something like that..
