Default Reverse?

Anyone else having trouble getting their car into reverse? I have a manual gearbox and of course you need to shift to reverse to exit the car. I have to go through the gearbox a few times before it will go into reverse. I also need to hold it in reverse when backing up or it pops out. Is this a linkage adjustment issue or a worn shifter?

If my car has been sitting, I sometimes have to put it in 3rd or 4th and release the clutch a little to get it to go into reverse.
If it is popping out, maybe you are not fully engaging reverse. I can feel a second detent when mine fully goes into gear.

There is not much adjustment on the shifter, and if the other gears are engaging fully, then chances are it is not a problem with the shifter. Is it the stock shifter or aftermarket?

You might also check to see if the reverse lockout solenoid is working correctly.

Default Stock

It is the stock shifter and I can feel the detent as well, but you have to really fiddle with it to get that second detent to accept the shifter.

I have no idea...tranny's are not my forte. I was hoping to get a lot more feedback on this issue. I am sure we are not the only ones having this issue. I am wondering if it is simply a linkage adjustment...Although due to the enclosed drivetrain, it would be quite a job to make any adjustments. It would be nice if it turned out to just be a worn shifter. I would use the MGW....4 bolts and 250 bucks...I just don't want to replace it if the problem will still be there.

The problem will still be there. It was there on my '06's stock shifter and it's still there with the Callaway shifter. It's only really a problem when the car has been sitting, as mentioned above. Release the clutch a tick and it usually goes right in. My '08Z with the T6060 doesn't have the issue.

An aftermarket shifter with a shorter throw will only magnify the problem.
As TheKomoman also points out, if you just release the clutch a little (you don't even have to let it out enough to move the car), the gears will move just enough that it usually will go right into gear.

It is the reverse gear lock out solinoid. It's GM part # 12523300 and is located on the top of the trans case. They cost about $150 and take an hour to install.

Pulled the shifter out last night and it seems fine. Not making any odd noises whenit does go into gear. Would the reverse lockout affect the ability to go into all gears, or just reverse?
