Default Time for a new Battery

Hi Everyone,

I know there is a lot out there on the C6 and Batteries.

It may be time for mine to get a new one. C6 2005 29000 miles, March 2005 birthday.

The original is a AC Delco 86-6YR. Should I go with the same model?

What are you all using now? What would you replace it with?

Can I put in a AC Delco 90-6YR which is used in the 2006-2009s?

Thanks everyone!!!

A lot of guys are using the optima yellow or red tops. I personally wanted a black battery so I replaced it with the high end one from napa that came with the warranty. You can use the one from the 06+ im sure as long as the cranking amps etc are around the same amount.

My batter just crapped out on me yesterday so I got an optima 78 I think. Fits perfects, seems to run smoother too.

My car's birthday is March 2005 as well and I still have the original battery in it. I see no reason to buy an Optima for much more money. When this battery dies I will replace it with another AC Delco since it has lasted this long. Why not keep it original?

Default Don't wait until the battery dies

As the battery starts to go, these cars will continue to start right up but the idle smoothness degrades and consequently low-rev shifting isn't as smooth. I presume the primary cause is alternator load at low RPM.

My car never died or failed to start, but after I replaced the battery at 60K miles the improvement in low-RPM operation was dramatic.

Before the Walmart save a buck people chime in to say its a waste of money, use a gel cell so you elinimate the possibility of a leaking battery raining down on your PCM which is located under the battery compartment.

Hinson Super Cars sells them to forum members for about 120 if I remember correctly.

Yes when I took out my battery last night there was battery acid everywhere. Looked like it snowed under my hood lol.

They are AGM not Gel Cell. Gel Cell will leak, AGM will not. People get AGM and Gel mixed up all time.

Optima is AGM.

Mine went south about a month ago at 15,000 miles. Picked up an Exide at Autozone for a $100.00 to get me through the rest of the driving season here in WI.

Tim, can you hook me up?

AGM is a superior design and if it exceed OEM, fits without modification of mounts or cables, and its $120 its a no brainer.

I paid about $110 for an Interstate after my AC Delco died one morning. Right at the 3 year mark. I hated the Interstate green labels, so I transferred over the OEM AC Delco labels so it looks OEM.

I will NEVER buy another AC Delco battery. My OEM 1996 leaked acid out of the side terminal and took the paint off the frame. Every AC Delco I have ever owned had to be replaced due to sudden death or defect. One minute its fine, the next its totally dead.

A little off topic but how long do factory batteries last? My car is a 2007 and no problems so far. Side note, I have a 2001 Ram with factory original battery that has 130,000 miles on it. Bought the ram in 2000. can I expect 4-5 years on our factory batteries?

Can someone who knows for sure if the two posts I have quoted are correct... I'm not a newbie to cars, been racing for 40 years... & I never heard of a weak battery causing it to run rougher...

Yes if the battery is/was "stone dead" and you jumped started it, it may have an effect on how the car runs, but I never heard of the two above example... if correct I just learned something new...

I've experienced a better running vehicle after changing out a weak battery.

hmmm interesting thread

"The B2015 is the Deka EXT20L in a different case (same internals, exactly). Deka markets them for Power Sport applications whereas Braille targets auto enthusiasts. "

I don't know all the technical details but the alternator is controlled by the computer system on the C6 and it's possible a weak battery may not get a proper charge for whatever reason and the idle may be different thus the smooth vs. rough effect. Kinda like when the AC kicks on and off. Four to six years is about what I expect to get out of a battery.

AC-Delco batteries were made by Delphi back then. Most AC-Delco batteries today are made by Johnson Controls. Totally different product.

The alternator is designed to maintain the battery not charge a dead one, so yes, your car will run better with a charged battery.

Living in the frozen tundra of Wisconsin, I use a PulseTech charger to keep my battery up.

Jegs sells them.
