Default Can it be done and is it safe to drain oil from the Z06 oil cooler

From what I have read close to 1 quart of oil is retained in the oil cooler and lines. Is there a way to drain this oil during an oil change so you don't have a quart of used oil in the system.

Of course, the obvious concern is oil starvation upon start up, and I am assuming the oil goes through the oil cooler first and then to the engine. Can the oil cooler be primed without removing it?

Yes all of the above is true and it could be done..........however.
the chance for a screwup is higher trying to do that. probably not worth the risk!

How then when guys install a new z06 oil cooler on their c6 how do they get around this without starving the engine? Is the cooler primed some how?

It would be a hastle but I guess you could weld a small drain plug on the bottom and fill plug on the top of the oil cooler... just a thought, anyone else?

If your going to do that, make sure you pull the spark plugs so the motor doesnt make any compression, also pull the fuel pump fuse/relay or unplug the injectors.

So..it's really a ~11.5 quart system, 10.5 serviceable?

at low rpms and no load there is plenty of time for filling the oil cooler
although I always pre fill the oil filter.
My car is a LS3 which has a Z06 cooler added. the most engine wear occurs on start up so once or twice a year to change the oil out doesn't add much wear. the 1/2 to 1 qt of oil in the cooler wont be much dilution to the new oil *8 - 10 qts in a LS7 and 6 qts in mine.

Not well known but it is a fact that if you hold the gas peddle to the floor and then hit the start button the car will spin over but will not start.

Interesting... thanks for the tip. I assume it would not flood the engine?

Actually just the opposite. As I understand the logic, when you depress the accelerator to the floor before you start cranking the engine the ECU cuts the fuel to the injectors to a point that the car can’t start. The mindset, I think, is the old school technique of depressing the accelerator to the floor on a flooded carb equipped engine to clear the cylinders. Try it…it works.

great tip for starting after an oil change.
10 or 15 seconds would bring up the oil presure

Interesting. Works the same way on my Seadoo Jet Ski's. Wide open throttle to pump the oil, but it won't start unless you let the throttle go.

Who knew!

I did this install on my C6 and just started the car. Not sure why you would need to prime the motor if you just drained oil out of it. A new motor, yes I get that but during a normal oil change doesn't make sense.

Even if the motor had been running before, when you install a new dry Z06 cooler and change the oil with a new filter that is primed it would take at least 8-10 seconds for the oil to go through the filter, fill up the cooler, and back to the engine. That is a lot of time without oil pressure, more time that I would like, at 800 rpm and no oil pressure it would not take long to scar the cylinder walls. I like motorheads idea of turning it over first to prime the oil cooler.
