Can it be done and is it safe to drain oil from the Z06 oil cooler
From what I have read close to 1 quart of oil is retained in the oil cooler and lines. Is there a way to drain this oil during an oil change so you don't have a quart of used oil in the system.
Of course, the obvious concern is oil starvation upon start up, and I am assuming the oil goes through the oil cooler first and then to the engine. Can the oil cooler be primed without removing it?

the chance for a screwup is higher trying to do that. probably not worth the risk!

How then when guys install a new z06 oil cooler on their c6 how do they get around this without starving the engine? Is the cooler primed some how?
It would be a hastle but I guess you could weld a small drain plug on the bottom and fill plug on the top of the oil cooler... just a thought, anyone else?

If your going to do that, make sure you pull the spark plugs so the motor doesnt make any compression, also pull the fuel pump fuse/relay or unplug the injectors.

So..it's really a ~11.5 quart system, 10.5 serviceable?

although I always pre fill the oil filter.
My car is a LS3 which has a Z06 cooler added. the most engine wear occurs on start up so once or twice a year to change the oil out doesn't add much wear. the 1/2 to 1 qt of oil in the cooler wont be much dilution to the new oil *8 - 10 qts in a LS7 and 6 qts in mine.

Actually just the opposite. As I understand the logic, when you depress the accelerator to the floor before you start cranking the engine the ECU cuts the fuel to the injectors to a point that the car can’t start. The mindset, I think, is the old school technique of depressing the accelerator to the floor on a flooded carb equipped engine to clear the cylinders. Try it…it works.

I did this install on my C6 and just started the car. Not sure why you would need to prime the motor if you just drained oil out of it. A new motor, yes I get that but during a normal oil change doesn't make sense.

Even if the motor had been running before, when you install a new dry Z06 cooler and change the oil with a new filter that is primed it would take at least 8-10 seconds for the oil to go through the filter, fill up the cooler, and back to the engine. That is a lot of time without oil pressure, more time that I would like, at 800 rpm and no oil pressure it would not take long to scar the cylinder walls. I like motorheads idea of turning it over first to prime the oil cooler.
