I went to check my fluids yesterday and my hood struts won't stay in the upright position to keep the hood open. Has anyone ever had that happen with no incident? Is this covered under warranty or do I have to replace? Any advise is appreciated. Thanks,Dean.

My 06Z06 did that back in December after about 4-1/2 years. One of the struts had lost its gas charge. Very unlikely that both struts have failed. They are kind of pricey. This should be a DIY. The same GM part number covers either side. You could buy one and guess a side that's bad and see if you are correct. If not, take the one you removed and put it on the other side. Of course, if one has failed, the second could fail sooner or later so you can rationalize replacing both at the same time and be done with it.

At each end of the strut, there is a band clip that has to be at least partially removed by prying with a small flat blade screwdriver. Tug on the strut end at the same time. The strut attaches to a small ball on the hood bracket and the band clip retains the strut to the ball at each end. The new strut just snaps in place. I used a little lube spray at each end to ease the new strut snapping back in place. It is really a simple R/R.

I had to replace both of mine last year on a 2005. I noticed that the hood wouldn't stay up with a slight breeze.

Have a helper with you to hold the hood steady and take the pressure off the strut while you change each one. It only takes about 2 minutes to change each one.

So simple a cave man could do it!!

just replaced my hood and rear hatch struts. Very easy. Agree that it is much easier with two people.

Thanks for all the responses. I will take another look at them and take Gold 72 advise to buy one and take the educated guess when I change it out. Hopefully it is just one of them.

I would suggest buying two. If I recall correctly, they were not that expensive.

Considering it is a 2005 model, both are probably worn out. I had to replace both on my 2005 last year.

Replace them both, because if one is weak, the other is not long behind.
I have a 2006, and I've replaced the hood struts, and hatch struts within the past few years.
Amazon is the place to buy them for a great price.

I agree...did the same thing and the Strong Arm struts are far and above the OEM ones.

you got no warranty on an 05, 38 bucks on amazon and problem fixed, it could be just one but it's 11 years old
