Default Maximizing fuel economy in a manual

Anyone actually use the shift to 4 when cruising slowly? Drops your rpm's down to below 1k which to me rationally seems like lugging the engine. But it doesn't sound like it when I do it and my instant fuel economy will read ~24 mpg versus if I was in second it would be ~12 mpg. So if it's safe, I really like the feature, I'm just not convinced! My manual experience though would never put a car in 4th at 20 mph. What's popular opinion here?

if your on near level ground put it in 6th gear if you want and it won't lug.have cruised in 6th gear in my 6 speed manual cars at about 5 or 600 rpm in the city without them ever lugging.a Prius will pull you though at that low rpm

When accelerating leisurely, I shift 1-3-5-6. The skip shift has never "blocked" me from shifting like that. Not such a huge drop in available power vs the 1-4 shift. Can't believe it's much of a difference MPG wise either.

I often do a 1-3-5 shift when driving in traffic. The 1-4 is just far too dead and when you have a minivan in front of you 1-2-3-4 is a waste.
