Default GM sucks when it come to gas caps!

I just got my 3rd "Check your Gas Cap" DIC message yesterday. The cap sounds "funny" when tightening it and taking it off, it almost falls off in my hand with the slightest counterclockwise pressure.

Surely someone can make a gas cap that will last. I've replaced this POS once and apparently I will get the opportunity to try a third gas cap.

I know it's a minor inconvenience but really? Really? I've NEVER had to replace any gas cap on ANY car that I've previously owned and I'm looking at #3 on a 2007 car.

crap....

I wouldn't say GM sucks at making all gas caps as I've had many GM cars without gas cap problems. I haven't had a problem with the Vette cap but it does act different than any other I've had. Your not supposed to put any inward pressure on it when you screw it down and it always feels loose even when it is on secure. I always prepare myself for a check cap or check engine light every time I put gas in it but haven't got that yet.

Must have just been a bad shipment of gas caps. I've had 4 C6s and no problems with any gas caps. Wife's Equinox and my Camaro had good gas caps. As indicated previously, don't put any downward pressure on the cap when you're putting it on.

Well, having tightened and un-tightened quite a few gas caps in my time on this planet, I'd say my skills at that task are pretty adequate. Let's recap (play on words! )

Put bottom of cap in hole. Turn to the right for 5 or 6 clicks and that should be it. To remove, grasp cap and turn in the opposite direction. Yep, that works too. Come on guys! It is pretty friggen hard to screw up "gas cap 101". I could see maybe 1 cap losing the seal but not 2 to where I'll be buying a 3rd gas cap to stop getting epistles from my DIC about checking the gas cap.

Hm... I wonder if I can get a really big cork and.....

Why stop there:
OEM water pump replaced: 40k mi.
OEM lifeter failure @ 50k mi.
GM supplied Nuts/bolts: easily break when attempting to tq to spec.
OEM seals start leaking for no apparent reason.
OEM starter selanoid: terminal loose/broken at 40k mi.
Oh, and replaced gas cap at 40k mi.

Since it is part of the emissions system it should be covered under the 80k mile warranty. A guy at the state emission testing place told me Chevy gas caps are more prone to leak than any others.

My Grand dad lost his gas cap back in the 50's for his 1950 Chevy pickup. He stuffed a rag in it. Worked for him.

If your getting a CEL, I would have to ask if you are diagnosing the problem or just assuming the problem is the gas cap? You may have a vacuum leak, bad sensor or numerous other problems. Might try a diagnostic tree from the service manual.

I have the same gas cap problem on my 05'. It only wants to go on half the time. But when it doesn't go on properly, the CEL never goes on.

I guess I'm 1/3 as special as nicki6 as I have only had one C6 and never a problem with the gas cap. Sure is nice to be special, even if it's only 1/3.

I haven't gotten "check gas cap" unless it was actually loose, however I did have to get a new gas cap because mine failed the gas cap pressure test...therefore I'd tend to agree. The Stant brand cap I put on my truck 8 years ago still passes so I purchased a Stant replacement for my C6.

I just replaced the gas cap on my 05. Stopped for gas and it wouldn't go on, so I stopped at the dealer up the road. The parts guy said "I always keep these in stock because they go bad all the time". $20. OBTW not a Chevy dealer, a Buick, GMC, X-Pontiac dealer. Same cap different cars. Just part of the GM parts bin.
