camshaft degreeing question (results show retarded 1 degree?)
I got the following results when degreeing my cam last night. I'm just curious if people would run it as is dot to dot, or if it's worth advancing it a tooth. Or if there's a margin of error that I'm close enough not to mess with it.
Comp Cams 4796 degree kit:
gauge zeroed off the lobe:
indicator at max lift:
indicator zeroed at max lift:
.050" on the opening side:
degree wheel reading .050" on the opening side:
.050" on the closing side:
degree wheel reading .050" on the closing side:
my measurements indicate the cam is retarded 1*

It's been a while, but IIRC one tooth is 7 1/2 degrees.

After looking around more, it seems that even an adjustable cam gear only has 2* increments, so I'm probably good to go. If anything, it seems that retarding 1* would help top end horsepower at the expense of low end torque, which would be fine with me.

did you only do one cyl or have you done all 8?
1 degree off isn't that bad, but you may want to check the others as well
be surprised how many cam companies pay attention to the #1 and leave the others... ummm outta spec (good reason to have the cams blueprinted, but the wait time does suck)
does Cloyes make the HEX adjust setup? perhaps that would work
or different crank/cam keys

For what's worth -
With the past dyno work I've been exposed too over the years ; we had to make + or -4 deg. changes to make a noticable change in the power band, or gain or loss in HP.
