Default R compound tire recommendations please for stock rims

Hello, I've currently got Nitto Invo's all around, the fronts have a decent amount of life left to them, the rears need to be replaced. At my power level the traction on the Invo's is almost non existent. I would like to replace just the rears at the moment (I've never mixed tires before on a car though).

Can you guys recommend an R compound tire that can be street driven (the car is not tracked)? I've read about the Toyo R888, and the NTO5R's, but I'm not sure about mixing them with my existing front Invo's which are 245 40 18.

The car is rarely driven in the rain, but it does happen sometimes.

Appreciate any advice / experience on what type/size tire I can use on the rears that is not going to screw up traction control or active handling.

Do you think i am making the correct decision by going with an R compound for a street tire only? Spinning in 4th gear is getting a little rediculous Please recommend the best size I can use for the rear on my stock 19" rim.

Thanks for any advice in advance.

i've used R888's before, great tires.....would not run them w/ invo's on front if your going to be pushing the car hard...invo's are garbage...especially if you are comparing to an (R) compound

I wouldn't go as far as to say the Invos are garbage... I have them on my bolt on C6 and I can dead hook first gear most of the time which I find awesome & they ride great, I can obv see why the OP doesn't like then because with his mod list I can see why he's blowin the tire off the car... If you want maximum traction and its not your DD def go MT if you want something a lil more streetable go NT05 in front and NT05R in rear!

I know alot of people that run nitto invo's in the front and nt05r on the rear. Stick with the same brands. I have made that mistake before mixing brands. I'm going with nt05r's with my front invo's

You could run R888's, 255/295 easy and I have heard people running 265/305 on stock rims. You will run into a traction control problem if speed get above 95 mph if you leave it on. In the rain they are ok but you must increase following distance and be smart. There is not much grip there if you push it even a little when wet. Probably get around 5K out of a set of tires.

I had R888 and will continue to use them in the front. I have about 7k miles and they are at around 60% life in the front and 40% life out back

Traction problem meaning that the system acts up at 95mph? Maybe I will have to bite the bulit and but them for all 4 corners. The sizes offered aren't quite right, so I'm not really sure which way to go. Do you know if the traction problem only on the 265/305 combo or is it with the 255/295 combo also?

Anyone else have any experience with these sizes, thanks for the input so far.

Never had a traction control problem on my car with 305/265, 305/245, 345/265 and I've been WAY over 95mph

I am in the exact same situation as the OP. Very close RWHP/TQ, same driving habits, etc... I have 275/305 Invo's on stock wheels and they were good until the YSi. I need something on the rear that can make the car reasonable in 2nd & 3rd. I have been considering the NT05R's in 305/35/19. Any folks use this same tire on the stock wheel and if so, any issues with fitment? How does it drive on the street? How is the handling affected?

255/295 combo for sure has it. Found out at a track day when I forgot to shut off traction control.

Actually the 265/305 has a difference of 1.1 so traction control may not be an issue.

R888's are a great choice for a "drive to the track tire". Not too mention you have a built in rain tire if you need one. Try to run the same overall diameter tire that equals the stock size. This way you should have no problem with traction control or abs brake systems.

I wore out a set of R888's on the stock rims on the back, and I loved them. Replaced them with Spinmonster style widened 18 in with Nitto 555RII's. They must have about 10k on them and still have some tread left. They have been terrific and offer good traction even with my mild blower combo. I recently saw a post saying they were discontinued. Have not verified that.

Both sets were run with Michelin ZP's on the front. Granted, I have not been on a road course, where I'm sure some bad behavior would manifest, but on the street the car handles fantastically.

I was going to go with notto 05s but after doing some research the pilot SS looks like they are very good performers and last longer and still have very good traction. Im gonna give them a try and see how they do. Id love to have some spare back rims and put some nitto slicks on them for some summer fun on occassions.

the only r compound in stock sizing is the pirelli trofeo.

its roughly 1500 per set and you can only get them from a few places. bob woodman tire is a distributor.

if you go 255front and 295 rear you can get roughly stock diameter tires with hoosiers, but these will wear out very quick and a lot of folks dont recommend them for the street.

I've been doing some more reading on the R888's. A few people said they are REALLY loud. One guy said he couldn't hear his exhaust over the tires at highway speeds. Anyone have any comments on how loud these are on the street?

I am not sure load is the right word, but they do make some noise.

Well, it's better to have a grip bias towards the rear. Since you want R's in the rear, that's good. Once you replace the front tires, match them to the rear. Be aware that your front grip will be lower and you'll be fine. Just never put less grip in the rear than the front.

So, summary. Put something like R888 in the rear, when your front needs to change, put a matching set.

Thanks, I will probably end up going this way. I've been told the fronts are on national backorder with no ETA at this point. Any idea what the rears are going for price wise?
