Default DIY LS2 Carbon Cold Air Airbox

I recently decided to upgrade from the stock setup for the airbox or "intake" but am unwilling spend 300 - 500 bucks on a cheap piece of rotoformed plastic and a filter, so I decided to modify the factory setup

This consisted of using spectre filters HPR7597 as well as cutting the guards off the top of the filter housings. In addition to this, I smoothed out the internals of the airbox. All cutting was finished with rough sanding then torch work to blend the finish a little more to stock.

Initial driving impression was good - with my new exhaust, the airbox mods actually did improve throttle response. The filters are rated at over 1000 cfm each or up to 490 hp each, so I dont think there will be any restrictions with my target of 475 - 500 hp.

After creating the filter side, I wanted to cover the airbox to help keep out some unwanted heat. I decided to use the rainguard along with some foam board to mock up a mold for a carbon airbox housing. After going through cutting, fitting, etc this is how it ended up.

btw the radiator shroud was cut prior to installing the carbon top to channel in fresh air.

Wish I would have taken pictures of the filter setup, but now Ive got a waterproof cold air intake that outflows the stock setup. Hopefully this will give some others ideas.

Where are you getting COLD air? I see where this mod blocks the hot air from the engine but don't see where any cold (fresh) air can enter.

same place I got mine....cut a hole in the radiator shroud and suck it in from the bottom.

Nice Job!

Thanks for the compliments!

That's correct - the air comes from the radiator shroud. Even on hot days in city traffic the filters are staying cold now.

Ill see if I can take some pictures next time I take the airbox out.

Only 1 hole was cut - a rectangle on the forward facing end of the shroud in between the two raised ears that allow the shroud to be fastened to the front frame

If someone has a picture of a c6 shroud I can draw a rough template

the cut for an LS2 would be different than the LS3.
