Default Half-shaft retaining nut questions.

Getting ready to replace my rear bearing units and I am finding torque specifications for the retaining nut all over the spectrum.

One place said 160 ft lbs

Another 100 ft lbs

Last one was 118 ft lbs

All said clean the spindle and apply red locktite and use a new nut. Duh!

The 100 ft lbs spec said to not drive the car for 12 hours to allow the locktite to harden ??

Can someone kindly provide the correct specifications?

Thanks in advance.

Found a GM service bulletin that specs 160 ft lbs, red Locktite, and 24 hours cure time for the Locktite.

That is what I will do unless someone has additional information.

Thanks.

Hate to add more confusion but the axle nut torque spec was confusing while GM went through their various recommendations.

After the "loose nut" debacle, GM came out with the original TSB that listed the torque at 160. Over a period of time there were failures that were attributed to "likely" that torque. So they came out with a revised torque spec of 140.

I don't have a copy of the GM bulletin but here's a response from talon90 if you care to believe him: (post 39)

After installing the new nuts, put the old ones on to act as locknuts. I have never had an issue since doing that.

Hell, that's a great idea. I torqued the new nut to 140 using red Locktite, then double nutted using the old nut as you suggested. Now waiting for the red to cure. Tomorrow is the day to see if this solved my roaring noise. If no joy, then the front will also be replaced.

Thanks.
