If you are planning to mod the car to increase the HP, keep in mind that the 05's are cursed with the weak differential cases. Several have grenaded, even stock HP cars.
If I was shopping, I'd pick an 06 or newer, just to avoid this.

Thats extremely rare with A4. The few I've read about were M6. I dont think I've ever heard it happening to an A4.

You'll hear 10:1 horror stories with the LS7 compared with the 05. It don't let them stop you from getting one. A lot of the 05 fear is from people that 1) Never had one 2) Heard from a friend of a friends former girl friends ex-boyfriend who knew a mechanic 3) Happened back in 05 and the recall was taken care of.
My 05 has been problem free, thank goodness

From reading your posts your 05 was in a pretty serious collision, I had the time to go back and read since I'm at work. No wonder you're having problems. Cars that have been in collisions are known for that.

It's funny there is some underlying reason why an owner hates "their 05 so much. I think it's unfair to judge all 05's when you own one that's been in a collision.
Speaking from someone who owns an 05 that hasn't been through hell and back. I haven't had any problems other than changing out the running lamps, oh the torture!

However, you are seeking info ONLY on the differences by automatic transmissions, correct? If that's so, RickT has answered the question. Then, it's up to you to decide, which presumes you've read up on/know a substantial amount about the 05s.

I have an 05 MN6 that has been problem free. I have installed a supercharger making 552rwhp and drag raced the car twice with R compound tires. I had no issues what so ever. After that, I did upgrade to an 06 differential because I plan to continue modding the car and racing it. I think for road racing, the 05 drive train is fine, but if you will drag race and mod the car, then be prepared that you might have a problem. If you get a good deal on an 05, then your starting out ahead.
