I always think of the worst possible scenario when I go into a project so I unhook the battery to keep that area from being a problem anytime I touch an electrical connector on the car.

I've had mine off maybe 40-50 times and never disconnected the battery. The general rule I follow is that if there is no power being used by the device, then there is no need to interrupt the circuit that provides the power.
I also tend to have no controllable devices using power when I disconnect the battery. I also never flip off the main house breaker while the wife is doing laundry and cooking dinner for more reasons than just electrical concerns.
