Default Cracks in Goodyear Run Flats

Well..don't know what happened, all the text I had with the post is gone. Here we go again. These tires came of a 2012 base, sold in March of 2012. Date codes show manufacture of 1911 and 2011. They have 10,000 miles on them. How common is the cracking of these tires? And is it really dangerous? I went down to the dealership and looked at their used Corvettes, and every Corvette with Goodyear Run Flats, had cracked tires on the rear. Someone there said that was normal with the GoodYear's, because the compound used was harder. HUH??

I had cracks similar to that in mine when I first got the car. The tread was still good though. Most likely due to age of tire. Time for new tires.

Tires are only 2 1/2 years old...They were on a new, when sold, 2012 car, that was sold in March of 2013. The tires should have lasted longer than that! They only have 10,000 miles on them. See my edit first post for more. (For some reason, all my text went away when I added the image.)

Ok, yeah I didn't see the text on your first post.
That cannot be normal for 2 1/2 yo tires. My fronts don't have those cracks and they are still the Goodyear original tires. I am getting ready to replace them due to age. 10yo tires should be replaced even though they still have great tread on them. I don't know what could cause that other than defective tire.

Freezing temps, and GM just put out a dealer warning for the C-7 that the performance tires are exposed to freezing temps as well.

If you have a Goodyear Manufacturer Tire warranty on the tires, then the cracked tires will be replaced for free.

Unfortunately, these tires never saw the car they came on. The previous owner of my car, bought a new C6 with a 6 speed manual trans. He had special rims and tires on his old C6, so they swapped out the rims and tires. My C6 got his brand new, 2012 rims and tires.

So, I don't think Goodyear will talk to me, no matter what documentation we have, regarding the swapping of rims and tires.

If the tires are truly 2 1/2 years old they should not be cracked like that.
The DOT number on the tires...1911 and 2011...would indicate the tires were made April of 2011...almost 4 years ago. Are you sure somebody didn't do a switcheroo?
Still, GY should give you some kind of adjustment.

the original Goodyears on mine cracked like that and lasted over 30,000 miles. the replacement Goodyears cracked the same way and lasted over 30,000 miles.I thought the reason was due to cold weather driving but now I'm not so sure as a lot of you don't ever seem to drive in cold weather conditions.mine are used occasionally in -0 degrees F temperatures

I think that is a safety issue and would talk to GoodYear and see what they say. Have them document the issue in writing..

you should find a GY store and see if they will do some sort of a partial concession towards a new set, that is if you want GY's. Those cracks can happen to summer tires as they age if driving them when they and roads are cold. If you must drive in those conditions, bump up the tire pressures and don't drive aggresivelly

As you have found out this is very common. After one year the Goodyear tires begin getting hard and handling/traction drops off. After they get hard the cracks begin. If you keep driving on them they will evenually separate and chunks will come off the tread area. You can probably fight with Goodyear and get them to adjust these tires, but it will still be expensive and in another year you will have the same issues.

Many of us have changed over to another brand (including the new C7). Almost any brand out there that will fit the car will be better than the Goodyear. I'm using Michelin (PS2 and now Pilot Super Sports) and very happy with the ride and handling improvement along with reduced noise.

What's the manufacture date code on the sidewall?.....it will be 4 digits; the first two will the the week of the year, the last two will be the year. In other words a 2209 will be the 22nd week of 2009.

I picked up an '04 with 12K miles three years ago. It had a full tread depth set of Michelin Pilot A/S with 600 miles on them. They had same type of cracks in the root of all 4 tires (otherwise they looked new).
