CA legal cam and header questions. San Diego shop recommendations
Does anyone here now what if any types of heads are legal in CA? What type of cam can you run and still be able to pass smog. Im in San Diego and I was wondering if anyone could recommend a shop that could help me with this, one that is legit and reliable.
Thanks guys!

Hello there....
Hello, from Chula Vista!! I'm looking for a shop also for my Cam/Stall install... no luck yet, I've visited a few shops so far and there are a few that I've had a few bad experiences with. I don't want to bad mouth anyone's shop on here as its a pretty small world we live in..... but I haven't found a shop yet and I've been to almost 10 of them already..... if you ever see a Vic Red GS with chromies running around thats me!!

Our ported Heads are smog legal even here in Cali. We port and machine all in house.
We can also get you set up with a smog legal cam and smog legal tune that will get you through.
Give us a call 310-326-2399 or Email us at HP@americanheritageperformance.com
Our work load is very heavy so if we dont answer the phone just leave a message and we will get back with you at the end of the day. Email will almost always get a faster reply (We keep a laptop right next to the machinery in the machine shop).

I'm curious as to what constitutes a CA legal cam?
I believe the stock 2005 Corvette cam has a negative valve overlap.
I assume that the valve overlap is what makes it CA legal or not?

Website as said by Kohle is in transition. But those Yelp reviews are killer (GOOD!). Says a helluva lot about this vendor, this shop and their attitude toward customers. And their honesty. Sometimes you have to drive a little to get a good shop. I'd drive to this one---if only it was a little closer.

What's legal is something with a CARB number what's practical is whatever passes the sniffer test. Emissions control hardware does a pretty good job so I suspect that there is a little wiggle room for some creative cam design, head work and programming that can boost power and still squeak under the emissions limit. Is it strictly ok? Probably not but as long as it passes the test I'm not sure how this stuff would be spotted. The exterior of a ported head looks identical to a stock head. Can you tell a mild street cam from a stock cam by looking at it? I doubt it and besides you can't even see it when it's installed.
The stuff that gets you nailed (JMO) is the obvious stuff like headers and moved/no cats and an engine compartment stuffed with a bunch of non stock, non approved hardware. These subtle internal mods will probably slide through.
Some time ago I saw a reference to an emissions compliant cam and heads package from West Coast Corvette in Anaheim, CA. Might be worth a call.

I believe 30 hp gain is the target for a California friendly cam for the LS3, as a stand alone mod.
Now this was with the sniffer test that is no longer in use.
With the new readiness testing method I am not sure, but just as long as the system reports back that it is functioning I believe all is good.

I know that California gets a bad rep with the mod community because of its strict and often inflexible rules but it needs to be pointed out that back in the day the air in the metro areas was really, really bad. The LA metro area is rimmed by mountains creating a really neat setting. Unfortunately these mountains act as a pollution trap. When I was in high school back in the sixties the smog was so bad that these mountains (some over two miles high) were invisible (from as close as only five miles away) behind a summer long shroud of lung burning air pollution.
As a life long California resident I, long ago, came to terms with the need to have pollution controls on cars. That doesn't mean that I like having my hands tied when it comes to mods. In the past I was often very aggressive with mods, but these days I buy as much performance as I can when selecting my vehicle and do my best to operate within the emissions limits when considering any mods. That's just me.

the cam u are looking for is 218/242 117 with of course over .600
my puppy told me that 242 wont make much more than 236 until u get that blower involved
surely negative 4 overlap is not ALL that is needed to pass ?
i cant imagine a 242 passing , even with 218 and 117 is it true ?
