Default belt problem

I just bought a 06 convertible and it had squeaky belt.I bought a goodyear gatorback belt and thought that would stop it. Now the problem is that the belt rides out of the groove and goes on top harmonic balancer. Do I need to replace the balancer? I'm new to the c6 thing. Thanks in advance,Charlie.

Does sound like a balancer issue.

post a picture of it from the passenger side of car.sounds like the elastomer between inner and outer hub of hb is delaminating causing the outer hub to move

Balancer is probably coming apart--not uncommon on the earlier C6's especially. Mind did the same

Be careful as if the outer ring decides to go rearwards it can wear into the timing cover.. see if the balancer wobbles at all at idle, that's a good sign that it's coming apart

Summit makes one, C2501, that is cheap and better than the factory one

Be sure to order a new Bolt as part of the install, old Bolt is a one time use.

Unless you like working on cars, you may want to out source the job. The steering rack has to come out to install it.

Might as well do a cam while you're in there.

Pulling the rack is a total PITA unfortunately. otherwise it would be a really easy job.

Supposedly you can push the rack over towards the passenger side and get it out of the way enough to pull the balancer, which would make the job easier for sure. I've never done it that way though.

GL with it.

When mine went it managed to throw the AC belt rearward and broke the connector on the AC clutch while it was at it.. so I had to replace that too

You will need a new seal as well as the new bolt. DO NOT replace the balancer and re-use the old seal.

I will replace the seal when we do it. I order the balancer and bolt from Summit.I lucked out and borrowed the complete GM install kit from friend who is service manager at a dealership. Also talked to a tech from the dealership and he said if we get the rack out he would the install for $50.I think with tech doing it we are on the right track. Thanks for all the help,Charlie.
