Whining noise Katech Torquer 110 Cam C6Z06?
Hi guys,
i´m a little bit lost right now in detecting my whining engine noise.
Had my heads rebuild with following setup:
- New Intake valves WCCH spec.
- New OEM stock Exhaust valves
- Bronze/Mangan guides
- Trunnion kit
- PSI Beehive springs
additional:
- Katech Torquer 110 cam
- C5R timing chain
Before the swap. Engine runs fine without any whining noise like an supercharger.
After the shop made the cam and head swap my engine sounds like an supercharger. Not so loud but i can hear it in and outside the car when pushing the throttle. It´s RPM related.
Here is a video where you can hear it:
What i have checked so far:
- Running the engine without Halltech Superbee Intake - noise is the same
- Running the engine without the belts - noise is the same
- checked the pvc lines - everything seems to be correct
Engine runs fine and pulls as hell but i´m a little scared about that noise.
I read in an post at LS1 tech forum that some cam´s could do such a noise due to the lack of proper surface polishing.
I´m afraid that these whining noise could be the sign for damage something in the engine. My engine builder says no.
Do you have some advice or ideas what else could cause such a whining sound and how to check?
Just pulling out the cam out of the blue is a bigger op and here in germany very expensive.
Best regards and many thanks.
René

Interesting. It does sound kind of like an air leak. I've never heard of a cam making that sound, but I suppose it seems possible. Sorry to hear about the problem. Here's a bump for you.

Burning Brakes
Sounds just like mine did. Turns out Comp had a machining issue when cutting my cam. You wouldn't have noticed it looking at it. Comp did warranty the cam and labor to replace.
Having trouble attaching a video of it, IM me and I can email it to you if you'd like.

Melting Slicks
Massive thread over on ls1tech about this issue, seems it has been going on for years and has to do with the finish on the cam lobes.

"In honor of jpee"
I can only imagine what a warranty claim like that would cost in Germany---expensive.

Many thanks for your response guys.
I will drive the car during this years summer season and will talk to my car workshop and to my tuner who sold me the TQ110 to find a proper solution for this. I guess it will cost me again a remarkable amount of money.
If i could ensure that this noise would´t damage the enginebay, i could live with the whining noise. But, you never know what could happen.
In case of a broken lifter - would this cause a total of the engine or "only" new heads?

Mini Supercharger
Do not worry about the noise. I have a much more radical cam with double springs and stock rockers w/ comp cams needle bearings. Same head work but adjusted the valve length to account for correct sweep. Makes the exact same noise. Engine has 6000 miles since heads and cam work with no problems. Just ran the Silver State /Classic (90 miles) mostly at 5000 rpm in 5th gear at 150 mph and no problems to date.
